The now-closed "Top ten harp players" discussion has brought a tear to my eye because 12 years ago, my house was broken into and vandalized. My CD collection was mostly stolen, the rest broken, and all my LPs trashed, including a lot of harp LPs that don't seem to have been re-released on CD. Except for my turntable and speakers, which were trashed, my stereo set-up was gone. When I replaced it, I replaced only the CD player and cassette deck.

Anyway, when thinking about my own harp heroes list, I began to think of the SBW1 tracks that I haven't heard in so long, but that were a part of my initial love affair with blues harp: "Polly Put the Kettle On"; "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and others.

The three records Adam mentioned at the end of the "10 Best" thread are clearly on vinyl. Does anyone know of any CDs of John Lee's work?

Thanks all.

I'll get back to you and do some of my own looking around.

AW, thanks for that link. I'm new to music downloads, but this is just the incentive I need!

Funny you should ask. I was just checking out future blues releases at Amazon.com and discovered a 4 CD set of Sonny Boy Williamson's (John Lee) 1939-47 recordings will be available on January 27th from JSP records. They've been doing an admirable job of reissuing important historical blues recordings. Their liner notes are normally well written. The boxed set can be pre-ordered.Anyway--

I have the Quadromania 4-CD set that Ryan mentioned above. I love it. It has a picture of Rice Miller on the front instead of John Lee, but it is definitely Sonny Boy I, not II, playing the music. I bought it last year at this time, very inexpensive as well.

Funnily enough, I have a Charly Blues Masterworks CD of Sonny Boy Williamson - like mr_so&so's it has a picture of Rice Miller on the cover, but is a a collection of John Lee's tracks. When I copied it onto iTunes, I downloaded the artwork for the American release's cover, which has the right person on it.
