Just got an impedance matching transformer for an SM57 that I bought recently. When i plug it in there is a fairly loud hum at all volume levels. It may be the cheap xlr cable or the transformer. The IMT is brand is SESCOM. Should I have bought a better brand? Is it the XLR cable? Any help appreciated. My amp is a VHT special 6 and I'm plugging mic to cable to imt to high input on amp.
There certainly shouldn't be a hum. Proper low impedance setups (which yours is, all the way to the IMT) use a system called "balanced"wiring where the shield of the cable is grounded but is not part of the signal path. These have way better noise rejection than high impedance systems which are wired "unbalanced." Have you used the cable before in other settings? If so my guess is that the IMT is simply faulty. I have IMT's for $19 if you need them. If you haven't, then it could be bad cable too. ---------- /Greg
Thanks Greg. I've used the mic and cable into an interface for recording and the sound quality has been good. The cable was thrown in with the interface when i bought it and looks to be of pretty cheap quality but yeah its worked ok in the only other application i've used it in. I was gonna buy a bulletizer off you anyway so i'll see how i go with getting this one replaced or refunded and i might need an IMT too.
