I follow my heart blindly. It has led me down many wonderful roads in this life. Today I had a message to make this video so I did-spontaneously, 1 take. I saw a vision to spread the word on my one of a kind approach to life and music and somehow this will be another piece in the puzzle that when done, will result in a world that Smiles With Hope. I am reaching out to the universe for creative people to help make this world a better place. I have no idea where this will lead to. If the video inspires you please contact me. Thanks and follow your dreams! Walter

Hey Walter, you've got some good vibes going on, and the service you provide to your students is beyond measure. There's never enough recognition or appreciation for the work our teachers do, and there's sure never enough money. Well, people don't go into the kind of work you do to get rich. It's often a calling of some kind. So best of continued good fortune with what you do. There's no higher blessing in life than to be of true selfless service to others. BTW, I don't believe you when you say you don't know where your inspirations come from. It's always from the same source, whatever name you care or don't care to give it. ---------- Matthew
harp-er: thanks and like you said I was called to teaching. My entire life has been a series of callings. I think everyone gets this but for reasons beyond me, most do not follow them. I have always been called to the poor schools. The rich can build trust funds and such as well as intense private instructions for their disabled children. The poor have none of this and most of my students parents are disabled (genetics at work). I prefer to be hands on with the students. That is why I am reaching out. Adminstrative/abstract(away from the actual students) tasks don't inspire me but are becoming rapidly necessary if I am to keep this program alive and growing.
One of the problems with working in impoverished schools is there is very little outside funding support thus I am reaching out to the universe. Well to do districts parents support their schools with private dollars/their talents. My high school has the 2nd lowest graduation rate in Ohio and the local economy is very depressed. There isn't much smiling and hope there.
I realize now that I am equally called to working with the poor and playing music. Money is meaningless once basic needs are met (to me at least) so I don't need much to get by. I get more joy out of giving myself to service than building a big bank account. I also love my work schedule. I never have worked a 50 week year. Music and teaching work vibes are similar. You are full tilt on and then you get some nice breaks. With teaching I get great pay and benefits. Many complain about the pay. I have my masters degree and lots of people say we aren't paid enough. Compared to my music days I am paid like superstar :-)

As I get older I find less paints a better musical picture. Miles Davis, Picasso, and many others have gone this route. The busy/fancy high brain stuff just clutters/upsets the mood for me. I see a movie as I play and the less I play the deeper the emotions I feel. Here is one from tonight. Walter

Thanks for sharing Walter, and thanks for your positive energies. The world could really use more selfless giving.
I also have an education background, and know how fulfilling it can be to see someone's life change because you don't sell them short. I have been working on an idea to share blues music in the small rural communities of my home state. There isn't much in the way of live music, especially for the youth, in these places.
Good luck in your educational endeavors, it looks like a great program. I could really go for some fresh bread right now!
electricwitness: Thanks and I am happy you have found a way to connect with the youth of today! I got hit with a calling to work with special needs students back in the early 80's and it just kept growing until I had to go to college and become a teacher. The unexpected gift I got from this calling was that it has brought my music to a much higher level. I never thought about this going into it. I figured I was done with music and would devote myself to this new cause but it has allowed me to do my music in comfort, freedom, and recharges me to go back to the trenches of poverty and hopelessness each day. Noddles: Thanks! I have been donating my time and musical sounds to the disabled and old age homes for most of my life. I never thought myself smart enough to go college. I rarely attended school as a kid and when I did I daydreamed. I never would have gotten a HS diploma with todays standards. Music has always been my guiding light and it guided me to this work. I never realized it would pay me enough to have a nice life too. Walter

Hi lor: That is interesting...... We have crossed paths many times but not got to meet. Hopefully that will happen one day. My wife is a bay area native and misses it. I do to. I just can't see working in California schools. They are a mess beyond words. Hopefully in 10 years we will be retired and able to move back to Sonoma County. I stayed at the Flamingo Hotel. I dig the 50's vibe of that place. Walter

Hey hey, seems we've crossed paths even more times than you guessed, because my wife's Italian family all live in Ohio, various places mostly in and near Columbus. She wants us to retire to the country somewhere around there! Ships passing in the night. Maybe we can shed some light. We plan to visit OH again late September or early October. Maybe we could meet up. I could trade something for your advice. I'll send email thru your personal url.
You're right about Cali public schools. Damn shameful. The consequences are spoiling the whole cultural environment.
I like your music. Latest favorite 'let your heart fly to the sky'. Combo of upbeat message in a minor key, interesting instrumental textures.
I believe people can be categorized (did I say that?) in two camps - those who make their life's decisions based on fear, and those who make decisions based on purpose. You know this.

Hi lor: I look forward to meeting you! No need to trade for anything. getting to hang out with you I look forward to. Ohio is good for now. It is a nice place but I miss the left wing/green/diverse majority of sonoma county. It is very right wing/ultra conservative/white here. I am also am not that fond of the winter here but the people are generally very friendly and the pace slow. I am a big city guy and living in a village of 3,000 in a mostly agricultural area is all new to me. Luckily our village, Granville, has a disproportionate % of left wing thinkers for Ohio. I agree on your take of people. Fear cripples ones journey. Thinking does too. I tend not to think about things and instead just go where the heart calls. One of the benefits of becoming a teacher, that I never anticipated, was being totally self contained and free to do my music any way I want. I am doing my best stuff today yet I was much more popular when I was struggling to do what I wanted...... The near total lack of ethnic diversity and the right wing mentality, also the winter, do give me pause about where I would retire. I'm not even sure retirement suits me. Heck, I felt Santa Rosa was too conservative for me! My wife says not to worry, I don't have to get into politics, just enjoy the nice people. But when I watch the news on TV there, and they don't even mention any foreign nations... worries me. I lived and worked and traveled abroad for a couple of years and I know there's a whole world of diversity to be savored out there. 'Nice people' of all kinds. Some not so nice, but interesting. The 'found art' of humanity.
lor: You might have a problem living in Ohio. We live in Granville and in the last presidential election was the only place that voted democratic in our county. My high school has 1,700 students and not one is Mexican. I miss that. But then again, for now, this is great place to live, pay off our debts, and be free of crime, gangs, and traffic. Nowhere has it all. Who knows what will happen with our economy down the road. If I have to end my life in Ohio, that will be ok too. I know I am not moving back to California unless I can have a recording studio like I have now.
Santa Rosa has come a long way since I first lived there in the late 70's. Sebastopol is our place to hopefully retire too. Judy and I met there (she managed and bartended at the Old Main Street Salon). I was there last week and it hasn't changed much but Sebastopol sure has! It is now being refered to as the Berkley of Sonoma county. They have a whole foods, and all the funky shops downtown are now real hip places from that perspective. I felt so thankful today to have a drive in me to make my music without compromise. Money, fame, mean nothing to my soul and my head is accepting this as a good thing. I am in harmony and have no worldly concerns about my music. I play music because I have to or will go insane and die. This is no joke.
I don't meet many musicians that came to it this way. My father forbade me to make music in the house. He would smash guitars I brought home. Music swelled up inside of me till it busted out much like a teenage girl whose mother got pregant at 15 and swore her daughter never would do the same. She sits on this girl so heavy and hard that as soon as she is old enough to outrun her mother she is out the door and to the bright lights famished for boys.
I was the same with music. It busted out of me and I ran out the door never to return. It was confusing to meet other musicians for the first time and realize most didn't have such a way of getting to music.
Most came to from a more peaceful, supportive, finacial, fame, women, don't want to work a day job, way to it. This is why I have had no hesitation in saying no to things that don't move my soul. I felt like tonight I recorded a hit song- a hit to the soul. My wife Judy came in as I was recording it and she danced a storm on it. Them are the days I live for. Until them I am ok staying a hermit. Here it is. Walter

Here are some from today. Dreams continue to come true if one has faith. If you watched my video, one of my wishes came true this week. A local school district hired my class to make 2,200 cookies, 32 dozen bagels, and 120 pizza doughs, per week for their school cafterias. If we have more time they want other baked products. The district is the one I live in and they are high end. The company provides local, fresh, handmade, and often organic, lunches and breakfasts. Also 2 grocery stores, 1 cafe, and the county run aging program (meals on wheels) are going to carry our products. This is huge for my program. We will be able to take in lots more special needs and at risk kids and I will be able to pay them with walmart gift cards. I give many thanks for this and my music. Walter
