Never played one, but I've heard some people complain they have an unpleasant taste.

I was given a complete set and like them. I prefer Marine Bands, but 23's are strong and heavy harps.

Probably bad (Brazilian?) electroplating - my gf once gave me a silver-plated cigar tube made in China and the smell of it was vile. I threw it away because I thought it would poison me!

they do have a taste but if you sip a little whiskey before playing you don't seem to mind

If you leave them out of the box the taste will eventually fade. I had to do several rounds of gap adjustment to get them to respond the way I like.

They have a sweet mellow tone - not the raspy gritty tone of a MB. The taste is pretty gross. After a year, mine still hasn't gone away. Ultimately what now keeps mine on the shelf is that they're fairly leaky harps IMO.

Hello, please forgive me my English (I'm from Poland). I have two 1923's (G and E) and I like them very much. The taste hasn't fade, but it doesn't bother me (I actually like it). They are little harder to play than Marine Band Deluxe, but they sound better for me, especially on overblows. 1923's have thick reedplates, what makes them pretty heavy (I think it affects the sound too). Generally I consider 1923 a very good harp for an affordable price.
