Looking for some advice on having a mic repaired. I have a Shure Green Bullett 520, it has a volume control on it. I think the mic is about 15 yrs old or so. The mic breaks up some times and sounds like it's shorting out. I've thought about taking it somewhere to have it checked, but if the element is shot I'd like some advice about which element to have put in. I have several other mics, but I'd really like to use this one in a few weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Possible cause could be the volume control. Seeing as it is 15 yrs old. The carbon track in the control may have worn down or there may be an accumulation of dust on the track. Do you get crackles and noise when adjusting the volume? If so it may just need a new potentiometer (volume control) or cleaning with electrolube.

It could also be the earth connection breaking - shorting the mic. This finally happened to mine last year, funnily enough also after about 15 years of abuse. The elements are pretty tough, so I doubt it's that. If you're confident taking the innards out, it's quite an easy fix - the earth wire connects at the back of the shell to the spring cable protector thing. when I fitted an amphenol connector last year, I tapped a bolt into the actual shell and with a spade connector, attached the earth wire directly to the shell (soldering directly won't take, but there are two lugs on the inside of the shell that you can drill into)
Bear in mind though, my mic is the earlier model without the volume pot, so I'm not 100% sure how yours will be wired, but it shouldn't be too different. As Tookatooka says it could be a problem with the pot. Check that first, then try the earthing.

Thanks guys. It does start to crack when I turn the volume up. I will try th volume control cleaning first. I guess the worst thing that can happen is I'll screw it up and have to take it in anyway....very possible...
Thanks again.
