can valves be made from the plastic things you pull off cheap bandaids?

Yes--but there are much better materials.
Danny G at Newharmonica.com has an enormous variety of valves from which to choose, and he ships for free--with no minimum.

The desirable qualities in valves include:

* Pliable enough to lift out of the way of a vibrating reed.

* Stiff enough to sparing back into place when the breath that's lifting the valve stops.

* Soft enough to seal the slot of the reed not being played

* Resistant to gunk that will make it stick to the reedplate and pop and buzz.

Materials used recently include ultrasuede fabric, teflon bakeware liner, and overhead projection transparencies. Meanwhile, manufacturer supplied valves are getting better due to some advances in design (such as the textured bottom surfaces now being used by Seydel and, more recently, Hohner).

You can also wax and polish around the edges of reedplate slots to prevent sticking.

hmm the bandaid pulls seem to wax paper now. but i like recycling i have calf bladder skin (beater skin)for oboes. i was going to use it on my azeri tar. but thay had to have used this same stuff on chromatics before the invention of plastics.
