Saw Howard Levy play live for the first time yesterday afternoon at Ravinia Festival outside Chicago. He was appearing on A Prairie Home Companion weekly radio show. Levy was outstanding, I'll post the link to the podcast when they post it next week. They played some blues too. Howard Levy was blowing through an Electrovoice RE-10 microphone for his amplified harp playing. I could not tell if it was an RE-15 or an RE-10 from where I was sitting, so I asked him after the show and he confirmed it was an RE-10.
Let's see, that's Howard Levy, Carlos Del Junco, Billy Branch and Brandon Bailey all currently using this mic. That's a helluva statement as to what these top players prefer. Just sayin'. There is a big wide world of harmonica microphones out there that does not include Green Bullets, SM 57's, Audix Fireball, and Shure products in general, among others.

I'm with you there. I've tried heaps of them. Philips made some great mics, including one with a black bakelite bullet shell. Very feedback resistant, massive bottom end, great size and weight. Very clean, maybe a little too much headroom. I bought a few cheap japanese crystals (about 5 bucks each) a while back they have amazing tone and can fit in the smallest shell (used a wooden salt shaker for a shell), and of course some great electrovoices (heavy as a brick). Some of the early japanese dynamics are cool too, with some great shell designs (Sony made one that looks like a phaser off star trek). I love em all, but when it comes to playing amplified with a loud band, I always go to something with a shure a Shure CM in it. ---------- Lucky Lester

The RE-10 tops out at a weight of 6 oz., so it is light in the hands. No "brick" here. And the ergonomics allow for easy cupping. I dare say that it is an excellent low impedance harp mic. Specifications below:

Did anybody made a face to face comparison of re10 and some CM/CR? Maybe anyone knows some video with such test or something. I know that the best way to compare is to go and try but here in me country I don't have a chance to do that, so it's almost impossible to understand the sound character when you listen to those mics from different people in different rigs.
