When you´ve downloaded an entire concert (in this case Carlos Del Junco´s w/ The Bluesmongrels, from Sugarmegs) that´s well over an hour long and you want to burn it on a CD, splitting the tracks on that audiophile is a good idea. I´ve spent countless hours trying to make heads or tails of Audacity, that´s supposed to be able to do this, but fail consistently. I´m computer illiterate with a vengeance and I´m totally pessimistic about my prospects to change this ... but somewhere I still have hope. I wonder, has anybody seen a guide of sorts to Audacity that´s designed for us? Thats talks to me like a child and does not make presumptions that it´s evident what you do when you "create" something that´s called a "label" etc?
It´s a pity, ´cause I have a feeling that Audacity is good stuff but like oh so much in the Digi-world it´s designed for those who already know it, and the rest arn´t let in. Cheers, Martin

Martin... Have you seen these instructions?
A "label" is simply name. When you label a clip you are giving it a name, or a title. No different than naming any file. ---------- Noodles

i do this all the time, and have come up with a pretty efficient workflow:
1. find the beginning of each track, hit ctrl-B to set a marker there. do the same at the end of each track. use the zoom-in and zoom-out buttons liberally to place your marks accurately. i always make sure there is a start/stop mark between every track: even in cases where one song medleys into another, i zoom *way* in and set two marks right next to each other. this ensures that when using file numbering (below), all odd numbered tracks are the ones i want, and evens are the ones i discard. makes it much easier to sort them out. 2. when done, select File->Export Multiple. a dialog will appear. 3. set the Export Location to where you want your files to go. 4. set the Export Format you prefer. if using mp3, you'll need to install the LAME codec (see docs for help). 5. i use the "numbering after file name prefix" option in the "name files" section, and set the prefix to 1 for first set, 2 for second set, etc. this results in tracknames like 1-01.wav, 1-02.wav, etc. if you marked them the way i mentioned above, you can then discard the even numbered ones, and you'll be left with the good ones. i don't actually delete them, just move them to a temporary folder, in case i screwed up.
this may seem complicated at first, but it's really not once you get the hang of it. i can split up an hour long set in a few minutes. use headphones to get accurate start/stops. sometimes you'll have fun audience chatter, response, or band banter you want to include that you might not hear using speakers. use amplify to make them audible.
have fun. ----------
