I have a JT-30, 520DX, and a Shure PE54 among other mics.

The JT-30 is a tone monster. BUT I can’t stand those screw-bumps on the JT-30 sides and the thing weighs 11 ounces. I’m starting to remember the knots I used to get in my back after jamming for ½ hour.

The 520DX feels a lot better in my hands and I can get a better hand seal around the rounder, smoother “Green Bullet” body style.

So…I have 2 options:

1. I can go for a lighter, rounder, (perhaps smaller) wooden bullet
2. Ask Greg Heumann to chop down my pistol-grip PE54 and add one of his bulletizers for that bullet style grip. I saw on Greg’s site what he built for PT Gazell….. what a beautiful mic that is.

Waddayathink?

I would suggest you contact Greg direct and discuss your personal preferences with him. I've found his advise very good indeed, even if sometimes only to confirm what I already thought.

Another option would be one of Sonny Jr's chopped down Turners. He uses vintage CR and CM elements in a Turner shell which is smaller than the 520. Volume control on the back. I know they're painted, I believe powder coat but I can't be sure. I know his site is suspended but you could contact him via email. I'm pretty sure he's got mics in stock.

Greg makes great mics...but there is a third option....put the element from the JT-30 in the 520DX. I believe it will fit.

i have had a custom Ruskin mic with the same element that's found in a JT30. this mic i have is built into a motorcycle tail light bezel and it's both smooth and light, not to mention chrome. also sports a volume pot as well. i swapped for it some years ago and have never looked back.

another of my favorite mics is one Greg modded for me. his work is superior and right the first time. he started with a NOS electrovoice m43u- approx 55 years old but in new condition- and put a transformer inside the housing to bring the impedance up nicely, then added a volume pot and a screw on to 1/4" connector as well. all in a pretty small package.

i would definitely talk with Greg and explore your options with him.

Noodles - you can't go wrong with either an Ultimate PE54 or a wood bullet with a good element. Believe it or not their fully cupped sound is fairly similar. The PE54 will extend further into the clean range when uncupped. The bullet will get fatter, but not by much. To me the decision comes down to ergonomics - which is more comfortable to hold and cup for you. The 520DX is the biggest, heaviest shell of any popular model. The difference between it at 13 ounces and one of my wood bullets at closer to 5 ounces, not to mention about 1/2" less circumference - is HUGE in cuppability and holding comfort.

@Noodles - You're holding your JT30 too damn tight. An airtight seal isn't always necessary. If you're cupping it so tightly that it hurts your hands and back, you've got bad mic handling technique.

If that's the way you hold a JT30, you'll get bad hand cramps holding a 545.
