Hi all, I'm using an Aqua Puss analog delay, and at low volumes (aka rehearsal), it sounds and works well. At larger gigs when my volume is up, it really fuzzes out and the tone is very thin. I've been thinking about why this is. For rehearsals, I usually (but not always) play a white label CR, but for louder performances I usually stick to my Front&Center mic, which has a NOS Turner ceramic in it. The Front&Center is remarkably feedback resistant, so I can play it hotter than I ever could the CR.
My current theory is that the ceramic has much higher impedance than the CR, which becomes more noticeable at higher volumes and the tone really thins out. I usually just shut off the delay at that point because I just can't deal with the tone hit. If this theory makes sense, I see a few options: 1. Use a delay that's friendly with the impedance of the mic (e.g., Lone Wolf, which I had but didn't like much; are there others?) 2. Modify my delay so it can match the impedance of the mic (I've heard about this being done with Danelectro pedals, and I tried to make an outboard box once, but failed) 3. Use a different mic and deal with feedback or lower volumes 4. Don't use delay
Any thoughts from the community? Thanks! ----------

I only have experience with a couple of ceramic elements, but I find the tone too thin and bright for my liking. Maybe its about the element change, not the delay pedal? ---------- Lucky Lester

You're right - the impedance of the pedal matters - and if it is too low it will suck a lot of mojo right out of your F&C - which is why it seems to feedback less. To my ear and between those 2 elements, the CR has way better tone.
One option you didn't list: Address the feedback issue with the amp. What kind of amp are you using? If it has a multi-tube preamp section, have you swapped in lower gain tubes? ---------- /Greg

very good point Greg. my bassman has tamed down a lot with a couple of au7's in p2 and p3. ax7 in p1 to bring in the most signal. i just got a lone wolf delay so am not sure how it's going to work yet, but in what we've been doing, distortion is not a bad thing. electric delta/hill country, loud sing-thru-the- harp- rig stuff. it is such a gas. i generally use either a cm bullet or a e-v dynamic modded to hi-z. i also usually use the smaller silvertone 1482 with the same mics and tube setup. i've heard yeas and nays on the lone wolf. these things become very subjective i think. i have 3 or 4 basic settings i am going to try live in the next couple of weeks and will know better then how well i like the lwhd. back in the day, before i had a tube amp, i used a boss delay to fatten up a ss amp and low z mic's tone, even though at the time i was not working with anyone yet. i know a couple of local guys who use the dd3 and like it a lot. as does adam too. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
