Probably covered before somewhere, but basically is there any advantage/disadvantage of micing an amp versus just simply using the line-out feature(assuming amp has one, in which case I understand micing is the only alternative)?

Many thanks!

For 1 thing, if you mic the amp what you hear is what you get; subject to the variables of the particular mic, and how the sound from the speaker is presented to it and how that signal is processed by the PA. when you use the line out there are more opportunities for the signal to be somewhat different to what you are hearing from your amp. I mean mainly you lose the character of your speaker. That could be bad, or good depending on your speaker.
There are a lot of variables, it's quite hard to generalise about the subject I think.

Experimented with quite a few variables; DI box, line out, two amps etc, for me in my situation micing the amp is the way to go. Good tone reproduction and plenty of volume through the PA

What SuperBee says...your optimal set up (preamp tube choice & amp vol & EQ settings) may be VERY different depending on whether you are primarily hearing the sound via the amp's speakers, or through the line out.

Line out's tend to fuzz up real quick when pushed, best for clean, rich sounds rather than driven. I personally wouldn't keep switching between the 2, pick a method, work on it...see where it gets you. Lined out, via a small amp (where you are mainly focussing on tone from the slave amp/PA) I tend to use lower mu preamp tubes, less volume & more highs. If it's a big amp, that can be heard from the back line & you just want some extra shove, then focus on the amp's tone through it's speakers & back it up with moderate line out signal.

Most line out circuits for guitar amps are driven from the speaker circuit. That means they see the signal that the speaker is seeing - just less powerful - but subject to the reactance of the speakers themselves - so they're not as far from actual speaker tone as you might think. Some amps have line-outs that are more designed for hi-fi applications - they come from the preamp side - and they are NOT going to have the benefit of power amp distortion or speaker reactance. The line-out in my Kalamazoos and my Sonny Jr's are driven from the speaker circuit and sound very good. The sound guys really like it because there is no mic to a) pick up floor noise and surrounding amps and b) constantly get kicked out of position.

Once or twice, I've actually run the line-out AND a mic to the PA - and mic'd the 8" speaker in my Sonny Jr. The sound guy mixed the 2 - that was awesome.

Greg - Are they running the harp amp through the PA at the Fox? If so, is it mic'ed?

I've mic'ed the Double Trouble one time. I've used the Double Trouble line out a couple of times, it sounded good. When I've done this with the Double Trouble, I find the tone that I like and let the PA increase the volume.

I've mic'ed the Super Sonny a couple of times when RJ was using it, but I didn't think it needed it. I had forgot that you put a line out in it.

Gary builds the line-out feature into the amp-they come stock with line-out.

Thanks. Greg was the owner of a SJ 410. When Gary came up with the Super Sonny mod, Greg did the upgrade to his amp. Later, Greg sold me the amp when he got his Avenger.

@Joe - yes - whether I bring the Avenger or Super Cruncher (mostly Avenger lately) it is always lined out to the house at Club Fox.

@tmf714 - the Sonny Jr Four-Ten didn't have line out built in. I added it.
