An awesome 4 part vid on youtube (alltogether roughly 30 min) with 20 or so guys playing/improvising on "Help Me" from SBWII, lots to enjoy and to learn here....

My question is:

They all sound so different but they are all playing against the same guitar chords and backing rhytem (done by the other harp players) So, are they

a. Playing different keys harmonicas, using the same scales?
b. Playing the same key harmonica, but different scales/positions?
c. Playing different keys harmonicas AND different scales/positions?
d. All of the above?

Help me, I can't do it all by myself..............

DutchBones,

As far as my old ears can tell it's all in the key of F--so dig out the old b-flat and wail. Rupert Oysler is playing on a low-tuned harp--possibly in a different position--and the guy right after him (on the 4th part) is moving between two harps--to change between second and third positions.

Of course--consider the source--this is just an explanation by a fledgling--I could be wrong--the one thing I'm sure of is the key.

Life's funny.

I haven't spent a ton of time trying to learn overblows, but I've read about and tried enough on different harps to get the occasional squeak. Nothing musical about it.

Today, my kid went to a kids blues harmonica workshop and they gave out free "Chicago Blues" Kay Harmonicas. $2.50 a piece. key of G.

I pick it up after he's done and goof around to see if it's any good. Try to do an overblow on 6 and bam if I don't get a crystal clear overblow. Hilarious.

Chris Michalek was at SPAH and is one of the players in the the video. You can contact him and he will be able to share how exactly it all went down.

Chris is outstanding at playing different positions other than the 2nd position. He has an example on his YouTube site.

Chris's Skype address is chris.michalek

Chris will also work with you if you have Skype (www.skype.com). See earlier post.
