When buying a new harp the salesman can blow through the harp with a little puffer that Hohner provides. Is there a way to tell if the harp is going to be a good one or another dud by listening to the puffer blow?

Easiest way is to buy another type of harp ie SP20s , Suzukis & LOs all seem to be better out of the box & don't have smelly swelling timber and sharp reed plates.

Those hand operated bellows are a gimmick. If a harp was BADLY out of tune, I suppose it could be detected..but likely not.
Now, I have a really good ear, and can detect 1/4 tones off. I have probably rejected more new harps than most. I got to the point where I was rejecting 25% of all Hohner's...and that was unacceptable. Have not bought one in over ten years. They are shoddy POC's.
Lee Oskar's are reliable. Huangs are all over the place...some last for years, others fail shortly. Herings have the nice tone, but they tend to fail abruptly. Still, I love the tone! Seydel's are nice, but expensive. My Seydel "D" failed in less than three months. The Suzuki's are bright, but Dayem!, they are engineered! Eight years and no failure!

Hi Gray! You got it bro!
There are no dead harps. Broken reeds, yes.
I am too lazy to switch reeds. I have sawed reedplates in two, to make a full harp. lotsa work.
Westside Andy gives away all his broken harps. Sweet guy...kinda the mutha teresa of da harp world.
