I know this question has been asked before, but I asking again.
How well does the Special 6 hold up playing with a full band at reasonable volume?
I'm thinking about getting one to take to some of the jams that I attend.
I've played through Fender Champs (other people's) and I've been able to hear myself pretty well.
Of course the Champ has more watts, so...

i don't think the special 6 is loud enough to be heard over a band without mic'ing it to the PA. mine certainly isn't.

Depends partly on the size of the room, I'd think. Mine is actually holding its own quite well in our garage-sized practice space.

I find that to get the 'sound' i want from the amp i am just on the edge of feedback(it is unmodded) so i would just go over the limit if i were to use the footswitch to add more gain.

bluzlvr: No, the Champ does not have "more watts." The 50s, 60s, 70s Champs have a circuit very similar to the VHT Special 6: A 6V6 power tube driven by a 12AX7 preamp tube. The VHT makes an honest 6 watts measured on a scope, while the Champs make something less.

With a 10-inch speaker the VHT feels and sounds much louder than the 8-inch Champ. But neither amp is loud enough for stage work unless the band is very sympathetic to what you are trying to do. You can always mic them up, though.

To answer the original question about the gain boost feature, no I don't use it. All it does is cut out the tone stack... That's it. It is not really a gain stage. I prefer the tone of the amp with the treble attenuated a bit.
