I was just listening to Sugar's incredible version of Hoochie Coochie Man for the zillionth time on Youtube - a question came into my head that baffles me. How does he manage that really strange sound that starts at about 4.53? I've heard him do this on some albums too. Can anyone enlighten me?
P.S. Come ot think of it there's another question - is that a key change he does when he gets the Golden Melody out at 6.34?

It sounds to me like he's doing a heavy throat vibrato while he does a "hand wah" with the microphone on the three hole draw (bent down a half step or so.) Rod Piazza does it all the time. I would test my theory right now, but I'm in a library, and I don't think my fellow patrons would appreciate it no matter how well I did it.. Doesn't sound like a key change to me.

Is it really classic throat vibrato though? It sounds more to me that he's doing the 'snore' technique as explained on Pat Missin's website. You simulate a snore type sound when drawing heavily on a note.

Yea the snore method sounds bit more likely - no thoughts on why he uses the golden melody NG?

Can't really see why. He doesn't change key. Maybe a reed went flat? He was playing for 8 minutes.
Remember fella Bangor Blues Jam 3rd June!! Tuesday night was great. 60 people came along!! Great night you missed!
