The Magic Dick interview is linked on this page. The YouTube video is up also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKsd2Nc14UU
In light of what Adam's theory on Bye Bye Bird this makes the interview even more entertaining. My fav group growing up was Deep Purple and they got the idea for Space Truckin from the theme from Batman. I love this stuff.

I found it interesting that in the beginning Magic Dick uses an in and out tongue motion rather than a side to side one... I tried it, and I either wasn't able make enough vibrato or I accidently re-articulated the notes with the forward motion of the tongue. If anyone figures out exactly how to do the tongue motion like magic Dick, advice would be appreciated.

I think a kind of tounge wagging in and out is the motion that seems to work for me--I can't get my tounge to go from side to side with any speed at all--but I can get close with a wagging or flapping kind of motion.
The whole interview was really great--Thanks Adam, for sharing this with us.
It was interesting to hear how much a guy like Magic Dick really cares about the sound he is making and how to do it and how to learn to do it better. I always think of this kind of player to be a guy who just lets it all happen and it just comes out great. I guess we all have to work at it--but it sure is fun work!

I want to add my thanks for the Magic Dick interview. I too have been having trouble with the opening tongue thing. I don't know how Adam does it so fast side to side. I have a little bit better luck in and out, but I have to combine it with with a little bit of throat vibrato to get the sound...

Yeah that inteview truly was awesome, Adam's not only an amazing player and tutor but a great interviewer as well
-TB your warbles, headshaking -TB in general - consciousness of tone - a plain vocal mice and Marine Bands off course!
Those where the headlines for me I guess. The only thing I dindt understand was that tongue warble/flutter of the whamer jammer opening...Magic Dick says 'in and out' rather then side to side..what does he mean by this?
I'm thinking...you have to block holes 2 and 3, sounding 1..then you pull your tongue backwards and 'stick' it in 2 and 3, sounding hole 4..a sort of back and forward and sideway motion instead of just covering the holes by sliding..does someone have an idear if this is what MD ment? Obviously I can't to it up to speed enough to hear it ...anyway it'll probably take 13 years to master so no need to worry to much, but I'd like to start of with the right approach...

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed the interview, too. Adam is a man of language. It's amazing how effectively and simply the use of language can enrich people's lives.
As America's public schools continue to decline, this lost art of eloquence and injecting life is honestly one of the biggest disappointments about the present state of our country (for me). I think it closely ties in with America's lesser appreciation for art and culture.

Although it is not a tongue slap, it may help get there.
Try saying "yi-yi-yi-yi" (rhymes with "eye")
That is one way to get the toungue to move quickly and provide both some vibrato as well as closing off the air streem in a stacatto.
Use variations as a starting point for the "tongue slap".
It will help get the muscle and feel going.

Plate Techtonic Bump I'm gonna finally get this song and wow was this interview helpful. Some top notch TB instruction here, as well as insight into Adam learning more about TB himself -really helpful. I must say I was seriously lucky to have been led down the right path on TB by Dick's protege Pierre Beauregard back in 1977. The end of the interview says there's more. Where would that be...?
