I'm sure every harp player has had this problem. One minute the harp you're playing is fine, and the next you have a flat reed, which no amount of filing will fix, in fact it just makes it worse. It is usually the third, forth, fifth draw reed, which makes sense because of the added stress put on them. My question is, does any body have advice replacing individual reeds? Where would you order them from? Are they hard to replace? I know that you can buy reed kits for some harps, but I'm talking about Special 20's and Marine Bands. I have collected a drawer full of bad harps over the years that I hate to throw away just because of one bad reed.....

Reeds CAN be replaced individually, and there are tons of on-line tutorials on how to do it. Mostly it's the Chrom players who want to replace a reed (rather than chucking a $200 harp!), so you'll find some very good stuff out by visiting the Chrom sites and forums. Good luck!

Try the Diatonic Harmonica Reference Page at
http://www.angelfire.com/tx/myquill/
If you scroll down the left side and look--there is a link you can click on changing reeds. Save this site for future reference, though--it is a goldmine.
Now, if you find, or know of, a place to actually buy replacement reeds and get somebody who will actually ship them to you in this century--please let me know about that. I can't even get most of the Harp customizers and repair people online to even answer their email. I went to Bushman harps a while back because they advertised that you could get replacement draw reed plates for them--great harps--but just try to buy a reed plate--nobody seems to have them!

Does it matter what brand of reed you replace with? I love the sound of the MB but have lots of old Lee Oskars reedplates that I could use to replace my MB reeds. My question is how much would replacing an MB reed with another brand of reed affect the overall sound?

Harponline is where I learned how to replace Marine Band's nails for screws and how to replace individual reeds using screws instead of rivets. Look at the workshops for instruction. In the shop, they are selling tools, screws, reeds, and spare parts for all Hohner models. www.harponline.de

Cheers for the tip. Just got my harponline toolkit and have begun replacing those nasty MB nails with screws. Blowbends have never been easier!
