I spent last week playing with my longtime drummer in my studio. It was fun but to be honest it was not as much fun as I anticipated. Playing with others has gotten too complicated for me. On my own with my 1 man band I feel much more free to drift anywhere without concerns. My goal is to be totally thoughtless when I play so life can channel through me and the 1 man band is the way to go. Playing with others involves compromise and thinking all the time. I realized this strongly last week. I bet most people don't realize how much they are thinking and compromising when playing with others. Simple things like just making eye contact with bandmates, not wanting to solo too long, even in jam settings are going full tilt in the mind. Being away from this for about 10 years has really made this clear.

Funny how life sets its paths for you and you never know it till way down the road. I began my playing career with the most popular 1 man band in modern times- wilbert harrison. Wilber had a huge hit in the 50's with Kansas City(#1 on billboard charts) but his 1 man band hit in the 60's -lets work together- is the only 1 man band song to make the charts as far as I know (#32 on billboard pop charts) and here he was pulling me over in in his caddy as I walked and blew my harp down the streets of Newark NJ..... I unconciously fought this path for 30 years, dabbling with the 1 man band on the streets and in my home and having a real band behind me. I thought that was the way to find my way. It was in its own way but the drive to learn to play many instruments took me further from playing with others very slowly until here I be today!

I got back to it tonight and do a festival gig saturday. I am excited about it. I think my days of playing with others are nearing the end. Walter
