Today I went and bought a new Special 20. I haven't bought one of these in many years, and I must say this harp is fabulous. Such a sweet easy going tone. I love it. Bends easy and the action is consistent all the way up. The only problem is in the plastic case; the glue holding the tray insert has failed. So the tray pops out.

I got it at Sam Ash in Manhattan. Interestingly the store was heavily stocked with Hohners. Gone are the blister packs and a new paper box is in it's place. It was really nice to see all the different models available. Hohner seems to be making a big marketing push here.

Great harp, special 20 in C

Is that the one within walking distance of Time Square? My geography skills are lacking.

I was probably at that same store this fall. They had a ton of selection in blister packs. The current SP20 is fantastic. I don't like recessed plates, but...

The tray insert can be repaired with a few drops from a hot melt glue gun.

Hey Jlnx, I had the same problem on my newest Sp20! Might not have been a coincidence. Of course with my new case, I don't need the cases no more :D

I had a C last year that was awesome, then an F that was pretty good, but my G (where the tray falls out of) was gapped insanely wide, and even had a bit of rust? on the plates. After gapping it is fine though. Good harps all of them. Indestructible! I'd buy more.

I like to use cell phone leather belt cases (old style) for single harps when I am out and about. Keeps them clean, uncrushed and out of my pockets. I agree on the special 20 being a good harp. My second favorite one at the moment.

The trick, for me, is ordering direct or from an online dealer that moves a lot of product. In that way, you are most likely to get the newest harps.

I am sure many of the harps at the local store here have been there for years and years (and years).

The blister packs are gone? New paper box? I thought the blister packs were the latest thing.
Are they sealed or can the package be opened.
I play GMs and the blister pack harps have been better. I've missed the new packaging.

Correct, yes, yes.

They are taped closed and way more packaging than the blister pack.

That's a cool store. There is a smaller one across the street that has cool stuff too. Oh, how I love NY!

My last relative in NY is having some serious health issues and I will be out there again pretty soon (between now and June depending on her health).

I could visit all the time...but never live there!

I patronize my local music store for my harps. Not much price difference, and the guy can use the business more.

@HarpNinja: Hi Mike, Sorry to hear about your relative's health, but if you do find yourself in NYC on a Friday evening within the next few weeks (and have some free time), you might want to consider going to see Steve Guyger at Terra Blues on 5/25 (his performances are great), Ron Sunshine at Swing 46 on 5/18, and/or Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes at BB King's on 6/1 (though I'm not sure how much harp Johnny's playing in concert these days).

And hey... living here is *just like* visiting all the time :)

i bought a Special 20 about 20 years ago and didn't like it and haven't bought one since. But I've heard so many good things about them over the years, maybe I'll buy a new one. Perhaps I just got a bad one. Hohner's quality control at that time wasn't the greatest.

Speaking of NYC, I've not been there since the late '90s. Is Manny's Car Wash still there?
