I've just learned from Jeff Silverman that Annie Raines will be joining us at Hill Country Harmonica. The exact terms of her participation are still to be worked out. She falls into the "pros in residence" category rather than a full-fledged teacher/performer, but still: it will be great to have her there in any form or fashion, and it's very likely, at minimum, that she'll teach one class and participate in a jam session or two. I'm sure she'll have some CDs to sell and sign.

If you're one of those fence-sitters who were looking for one more last little bit of a reason to attend HCH this year, I'll humbly suggest that you've just gotten it.

I caught Annies show that was part of a Blues compition down in Marietta Ohio. It was the first time seeing her live and this tiny little thing was coming through the doors the same time we were and I was thinking WOW, she is a cutie pie and then it hit me it was Annie, she must be only 5 ft tall but packs a powerful punch in her harpin, great, great performance with her hubby...

When I still lived in south Florida, I helped organize a tribute night to Rock Bottom, who had just died. Paul and Annie had a gig at the same club the next night and, as they arrived in town a little early, she came to the jam. Not only is she really cool and friendly, Annie has massive chops. Great player.

Annie is a fantastic player. She has great tone and superb chops. I have no doubt that all who attend will be impressed with Annie's playing, her knowledge of the instrument and of course be wowed by her personality too.

OK, you guys are ticking me off. I was OK with missing HCH this year, because I am going to visit my Daughter and Grandson across the country, but you guys keep adding people to make me regret my decision. Thats not fair.

I took a few lessons with Annie back in 2000. She was the one who really got me started on blow bends in the high register. Awesome teacher, and a really great, friendly, down-to-earth personality. In my opinion, she's one of the most important players of her generation, and doesn't seem to get nearly as much mention as she deserves. That's awesome that she's going to be at HCH. Like Adam said, if you were undecided about going, now there's all the more reason to go.

I've taken lessons from Annie up in Boston for three years and it's done more for my playing than anything. She really knows how to break concepts down to brass tacks, is a really funny/nice person and one hell of a player. Her and Paul Rishell is a must see show in the Blues.

Annie has recently (I think it was recently) made an instructional video for Truefire--it's been tempting me but I haven't tried it yet--she is a wonderful player and the sample clip looks great--check it out at:

Too much fun back in, I believe, 1992 or 93. SPAH in Detroit...Annie showed up and signed up for the (at that time) Thur night blues jam. No one knew who she was, but we all knew she was cute and tiny with big hair. She hit the stage and COMMANDED the band with confidence. Knocked us all out, fer sure.

That video is quite good. Little bit of everything in there. Haven;t had time to really dig into it yet but I have given it the once over.
