GreyOwl> on re reading your posting about your journey I can equate to your findings on early learning. I, unlike you only played in 1st, 3rd & 12th as a pre teen youngster. Parties at our house were always accompanied by Fiddles, Accordian & Harmonica. I never had a clue what positions I was playing as I had no references, tabs or anything.I never knew about keys except one G was lower than my other a C. All by ear. I unfortunately play no other instrument.

What I did learn in those too few early years was never forgotten even though I couldn't touch a harp for over 50 years. Coming back was like hopping back on a bike.... easy. But, I had never played anything in 2nd pos and the learning curve on coming back was steep & frustrating. I still struggle on 2nd & having to learn it so late in life was like learning a different instrument. Sort of back to front and upside down to what I felt as natural.

Personally I don't listen to much harp music. I listen mainly to country & appreciate the harp I hear. My harp idols are Charlie McCoy & Buddy Greene but again I don't study their work. I prefer to target tunes & players with whom I can relate & perhaps have a chance to benchmark against. A lot is way out of my reach.I have no desire to copy or play like someone else however I certainly would like to be a better player. But overall it's for me a fun hobby.

Facts.
I read that Magic Dick came to the harp in '69; Whammer Jammer was performed in '71 and remains up to now
a benchmark.
Sure he has the lungs and sure he worked a lot but sure also, he had the talent, otherwise I don't understand his outstanding evolving.

natural talent (in music) is someone who has a great voice and doenst even know it, or practice it. they just walk up to the mic and do what comes naturally, and people respond. its there, or it isnt, and no amount of practice or lessons can change a voice into something it never was to begin with....

@ Kyzer I am sure vocal coaches would disagree but I think you have a point. I have heard people who can't sing really very well at all, who have been coached. Sure there has been an improvement but not too the extent where you would say, wow that guy's got a really good voice.

Is this the same with an instrument I wonder? If someone doesn't have a natural aptitude for playing an instrument can their performance be raised, through sheer hard work, to the level of a virtuoso performer.

@ Laurent Just picked up your post on the previous page re Milteau. I have covered a few of JJ's songs (Fragile, Big Walter, Marcelle & Marcel and Le Wolf)and would be keen to try more so this could be an opportunity to obtain the necessary backing tracks. I'll check it out, Ta.

Frank!...
Maybe you found the reasons of his talent: Dick turns Magic only when playing harp?

Greyowl, hope you'll find...tell me.

I think eventually that the word "talent" is equivocal.
It could be a way to overlook decades of player's work, and particularly regarding the harp: who could have told that this instrument has so much to offer, if and only if you work hard on it?
Maybe that thanks to the talent, you don't need motivation anymore, can we say that?
