I really like Rick Estrin's way of playing. No speed demon virtuosity, I don't think he's using any overblows (?), but as far as straight ahead, mainstream blues harp goes, he's got it covered. He's got the groove, he's got the sound (the almighty "TONE"), he's got the feel: dam! he's got the blues. And (aside from the trick stuff toward the end, which gives a little schtick to the act) the crowd responds to the basic goodness of it all. Thanks for the post. ---------- Matthew
Really good stuff. It's been a long time since I've seen him play - thanks for sharing this.
It aint easy keeping a basic blues harp solo interesting for 24 bars (two rides) - let alone for five minutes. I like how he transitioned to the PA mic and hand cupped cleaner sound - then back to the bullet mic and amp at the end. Very SBII sounding to my ear - without apeing him directly.
He's good without OB's or speed. - A lesson to be learned in that alone.
By the 5 min mark he has the crowd in the palm of his hand and they spontaneously break out into clapping with the groove and their in that "groove trance" and if he wanted to he probably could of kept them clapping for a s long as he wished....
