I use to take my collie rescue to the county nursing home in santa rosa, ca. I met Rocky there in 2005. He loved Benson and I noticed an old guitar case next to his bed. He was dying of cancer. He and I hit it right off. He was a professional musician all his life in Los Angeles. I brought in a mobile recording setup and he talked and played, including his story about how he learned the star spangled banner on the harp at a age 1. He was in hospice, couldn't get out of bed and was heavily medicated. He did all these songs lying in bed with oxygen going through his nose. His room was packed with other residents wandering in as he played and talked. Our next session was to be with him on piano. I was excited because he told me he played mainly boogie woogie but when I got there his roomate told me he died the day before.
Could one of you research experts help me locate Rocky's son? On the track - Rocky talking- http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=2305322
he mentions his son makes irish instruments in OH. He told me he hadn't seen him in a long time and I was going to get his sons info from him but he died before I could. I now live in OH and would love to forward this session to him.
I had forgotten about this until this morning. If I had enough money and time, I would travel the welfare nursing homes in search of guys like rocky so as to document their stories. Back in austin I came upon one of bob wills original fiddlers and an old man that sang slave field workers songs. Here is a link to rocky's music and stories. walter
