Its a lonely existence being a harmonica player in the UK. So I am toying with the idea of organising a harmonica meet later in the year. It would either be at a pub, art centre or on a campsite. The idea would be to have various events and workshops during the day, followed by a guest band in the evening. It really is just an idea at the moment, I am just trying to gauge interest. Venue would probably be North Midlands, Peak District.

What do you think, any interest?

Hi Martin,
Have a look at the National Harmonica League website for info and ideas.
Contacts are available on the website.
Have a look at the NHL Diary of events, that will give you an idea of when to hold it.
Finally contact Roger Trobridge or myself when you have something in place so it can be advertised on the HNL site for publicity.
I have a been to several of these type of events and by far publicity is the key. Flyers, local papers etc.
They are fun and seem to draw beginners a lot so think of a beginners workshop and something for the others. there is a natural break at tea time so think of something to do before the evening activities like an open mic or acoustic jam or something to encourage players to have a go in a safe environment for example every one in a circle of chairs with a backing track or guitarist. Beginners will not want to participate so think about paring up with more confident players etc or have some workshops on Amplification (what why and how much) mic techniques in free air or with a bullet mic.
Just a few ideas.
Hope this helps
Russ

Great idea Martin. I would think there would be plenty of interest from us UK blowers.

Sounds good to me. It would be nice to have something a little closer to home too; the Peak District is close by. I'd be interested.

Libertad,

It's a great idea - you will have a blast.

I have helped run the Brighton festival for the two years - its loads of work and loads of fun.

I'm sure you have great ideas and it will be a success - please feel free to throw any questions at me - we have learnt loads from running the previous ones (we had upwards of 50 people, 8 workshops a jam and bands in the evening - having typed this in i realise how well we did!!).

good luck

Where abouts in the Peaks will it be, roughly ?
I've got relatives down that way and would possibly be interested too.

@libertad: I'm in! Find a way of getting me to your part of England--airfare, work permit, hotel--and I will do it for cheap. I'll bring my one-man band insanity to your part of the world and put on a clinic, too.

the Peaks and the harmonica. Those two would go very well together I think.

Depending on costs etc; I would be up for this.
