Hey All,
I've been thinking about getting a loop pedal, to experiment a little.
My quick question is this; all it needs to do, is just loop. I don't need any effects, options etc. I just needs to be able to loop 12 bars.
Anyone has an suggestion for the most basic pedal out there?

Boss RC-3 is my recommendation considering what you're asking. ---------- Brandon O. Bailey Official Website of Superchucker

I have an Akai Headrush 2 - it is nice but you don't have much looping time with it. Depending on the quality of sampling and whether or not you want to re-record over the track, you have between about 15 and 30s, which may be a bit short for a full 12 bar.

hmm okay that boss pedal is a little bit expensive..I've to see if I can get it secondhand. But I'm looking for one with some more record time than the Akai Headrush I think. I was thinking about using it for some blues too. Thanks all.

I mentioned this is another recent thread about looping. I have owned the original Jamman, and the Line 6 DL4. But my favourite looper is the Zoom G3. For slightly more than the Akai you get a 40 second looper, with loads of different effects and amp models. For each patch you effectively have four pedals. Three effects and a looper. The reverbs and delays are great. Worth considering IMHO

I picked up a Digitech Jamman off craigslist for 100 bucks... I love it and use it to gig with regularly, it can have up to 16 hours of loop time, which is way too much but, if you want to store your song ideas you can and go back to them later. I have found it invaluable for song writing.
I also have a Line 6 dl4 which I also really like but I found that the loop time was not long enough so now it is my delay pedal.
Hope that helps. ---------- electricwitness.com

thanks Martin. I'll look into that too. But I really don't need fancy effects. Maybe a delay would be fine, but I already got one.
If I could get a relative cheap one without any effects, just a long enough loop time, that would be my first choice.
How much bmp would a medium slow blues be? 90-100? 48 beats for a 12 bar..how much seconds do I need. God I suck at math. Around 30 seconds would be okay, but a little bit more would be nicer.
Thanks electricwitness that helps!

Brandon, do you still use the Akai for live performances? Or the boss? (or both?). I was wondering if the boss is also suitable for the... lets call it 'Son of Dave stuff', performed live.

Just a quick question. I have a looper built into my Line 6 amp. It can overdub, but only loops for 14 seconds on each track. I figure that would be enough to knock out simple stuff wouldn't it?

You can't loop 12 bars in 14 seconds.

Arthur--you can if you play really fast. There are a bunch of software loopers, if you don't mind taking a laptop to the gig--and some of them are free.

Sorry, I was going off the rails of the thread a little.
What I meant was rather than 12 bars, more a kind of comping thing on one chord.

Let me think out loud
at a slow 60 beats per minute that's 1 beat a second 4 seconds per measure 12 measures would be 48 seconds
I've never used a looper, but I could see where you would want 100 seconds or more. Sooner or later you will want to do a 16 bar.

I just discovered a new option (to me anyways), and that is a used Boss RC-2. That's the old Boss model. It's all over Ebay for under 100 dollars. Has 16 minute of looping time over 11 channels. Seems like a cool pedal.
So far as I could find out, the new Boss RC-3 has 3 hours of time over 99 channels, and allows for USB connectivity and recording backing tracks that way, which seems like an extremely cool busking-feature (although battery life might limit this)! It's stereo as well, which the RC-2 doesn't have. The drummachine on this is less elaborate than the RC-2's though. But who would need that when you can load backing tracks?
So perhaps for just looping, the RC-2 might be a cheap alternative to the Jamman's, RC-3's an what have you.

I just got the digitech, I was looking for the same thing as you and after researching them and talking to the saleman I settled on that and I am very happy with it. I am looping bass lines live on stage while taking harp solos..

Software loopers-- Ableton Live isn't free but lots of people like it. There is Moebius http://www.circularlabs.com/ and it is free. Also a program called Ambiloop http://www.ambiloop.com/ is free. I really like the Oberheim/Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro, but you need a MIDI pedal to use it well, and I run out of floor space-- So I am using the original Digitech Jamman for sample playback and the (Texas made--in Grapevine, near where SPAH 2012 is being held) Boomerang III for live looping. Most of the time I loop guitar, and solo on harp, but the Fireball is going into the Digitech so I COULD loop harp. I have started doing a thing where I use the Digitech 355 to create short loop using the delay, assigning the expression pedal so that delay hold happens when the pedal is "to the metal". That's gotta get old for the listening audience tho . . . Oh yeah, I have the EH Freeze in the signal chain too, it is basically a digital audio sustain pedal (!)
