I be needin' to purchase (retail) a mic for vocals, either tomorrow or Monday, no time for a wrong choice. From what I read here, the Shure SM58 would be a good and safe choice.
I won't be playing harp through it, strictly vocals. Any caveats or suggestions otherwise?

SM58 - worldwide standard, absolutely bullet proof. If you plan to play acoustic harp through it AND sing through it, consider an Ultimate 58.

@Greg Heumann and BeardHarmonica....time constraints and margin for error are the main concerns at this point. An Ultimate 58 would be nice, but asking Greg to drop everything and prep one and ship it (and maybe push other customers' deliveries back) would be rude, I'm thinking. I need to do a solo act on the 29th, and I would like a few days to dick around with it. Although my time might be better spent putting up some chicken wire. I also have to write a song in the meantime.

One budget alternative you should consider is the Shure SM48 but you can't go wrong with an SM58, which is what I use for both vocals as well as acoustic harp.

@FMwood: Go ahead and ask! Ultimate mics aren't like wood mics. I have everything in stock, no finishing is required, just final assemby. I make all the time consuming bits up ahead of time. I turn Ultimate orders around in 2 business days, usually less. If you order within the next few days there's no reason you can't have one for your gig.

Yep, the SM58 for price, tone, and for acoustic harp use.

i'm sort of going the opposite way lately. the hill country trio i am in just now, i sing and blow harp through my 707a bullet with a cm element. into the silvertone 1482. since this is somewhat loud and distorted blues it seems to be working well. i'm singing Jimmy Reed and Wolf and a few others for good measure.
tonight was a really smashing success. packed the house after a tom petty concert nearby let out. the owner of the club wants us back any time the arena has a concert!

i like a sm58 or a 58 beta which my wife uses mostly. i have fender and peavey knockoffs of the sm58 as well as a behringer 58 knockoff, which i do NOT recommend. it just does not reproduce as well.

Well, Greg says he can put together an Ultimate 58, complete with cable and IMT, and ship it Monday. Sooo....the check is in the mail, as they say. Up to now I've only played at campfires, living rooms, tailgate parties and such through my 5-watt Pignose, so my voice has been big enough to get by just fine without amplification. I will be harping and singing through a Bassman, AND I want to try singing through a Line 6 solid state amp (15-watt) for a parody version of Heartbreak Hotel. Thanks for the input, gentlemens.
