I'd urge everybody to check out Ronnie Shellist's new CD, "'Til Then." He played me many of the tracks when I stayed with him back in January just before the Boulder clinic and I was mightily impressed. He's found a style that is immediately accessible to traditionalists, with a big fat tone and Chicago-ish approach, and yet he's managed to put his own stamp on it--the mark of individuality that, I think, lets him pass the three-second test on the radio. There's an identifiable Ronnie Shellist sound now. I know how to listen for it and would recognize it if I were given a blind taste-test, a "Who is this player?" test. His voice is part of this, actually: he's got an immediately distinctive way of shading vocals lines so they end on the flat seventh rather than the tonic.
This CD is already climbing the charts and will begin the process of enlarging his reputation from a guy that most of us have heard of into "Hey, the dude is a force to be reckoned with." I'd urge members of this forum to check it out. It's available from his website (google ronnie shellist til then) and from Amazon mp3s. Check out the previews. I love the sound of "One Day." It's a haunting track.

edited to add: The previews will give you a vivid sense of the overall contours of the album, but they don't actually contain much harp! You'll need to buy the album to get that. Buy it!

I have listened to it many times. Lots of good music. I am partial because I have known Ronnie over fifteen years. Still, most of my friend's music I listen to once and once only.

Just listened to the two tracks he has up on his website from the album, and I like what I'm hearing. He's got a very expressive tone, and I like the flavor on the guitars. I felt like the lyrics left something to be desired, but then, most do. Very strong work -- I'll probably buy it.
Adam: do his vocal lines really END on the flat 7th instead of the tonic? I was hearing him kind of lilt on many of his final notes, which gave his voice a really nice of tone. It's often kind of hard for me to tell exactly what note he's ending on due to that, but then, your ear is surely better than mine. In any case, it reminded me of some bluegrass and folk stuff I've been listening to, and I agree that it makes him stand out given the type of soundbed he's playing over. ---------- Check out my music at http://bmeyerson11.bandcamp.com/

Ronnie has a great sound. The CD is also on iTunes. There's a fair amount of harp on the previews there, but not on all the cuts.

Well, I certainly must concur with Adam's post as I posted a similar but less explicit opinion when I got my advance copy. I've taken lessons from Ronnie, and he has been a big influence on me...as well as being a good guy.
