Has anyone seen a schedule for the Hill Country Harmonica III workshops yet? I thought it was to be released at the start of April...

I think you should perhaps ask Jeff or Adam directly instead of throwing it out to the cosmos...

They said they would post it when it was set. Just keep checking here and the HCH website. I'm sure it will get a grand announcement.

I thought maybe I had overlooked the schedule somehow, and the collective unconscious of the cosmos would direct me to the information without me bothering Adam or Jeff directly.

I am sure that many who are looking forward to HCH III are interested in the schedule. I have regularly been checking here and on the HCH site and HCH forum without success.

Since only you have responded, and no one has directed me to the schedule, it is likely that the schedule is still pending and not yet posted. I will wait and keep checking here and on HCH where it was posted that the schedule would be out at the start of April.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion about my approach to this... but I believe that asking the group if anyone has seen the information is OK.

Sorry, I have two young daughters and my first reaction to questions like that are to get them to ask the question directly. My natural dad reaction.

I am just as excited about the schedule. There will be a big announcement from both Adam and Jeff to be sure. At this point, I have learned to pace my excitement, as I would be coming apart at the seams for weeks before the event. I wouldn't miss this event, and I look forward to seeing you there...

You are exactly right about the places to check. Just keep an eye out for it. There can always be last minute changes, which is always exciting!

Once the schedule is out I will likely make a plan for what sessions I will attend, and then just like last year, change it on impulse based on what appeals to me at the time.

See you there!

Not being familiar with this particular event, I might suggest what I've found to be true in other events, from SPAH to Hohner International Festivals -

pre planning where you will spend your time by creating a schedule, only to throw it to the wind once your are on site may be a waste of energy. These events have a momentum all their own and you may be swept up in the moment once you arrive. Like a good harmonica player, perhaps improvisation in the moment is the best advice.

My favorite experience was participating in the Blues Award show in Memphis backing up Johnny "Yard Dog" Jones. The event coincided with a great music fest. Wandering around this fest, I happened upon a Gospel Tent off to one side, off the beaten path. Entering the tent I noticed a much smaller crowd than at the other venues. However, this was WHERE IT WAS HAPPENIN', FOLKS". Unbelievable energy and music.

Never would have found it had I stuck to a pre planned agenda.

Thanks to all who are asking this fair question: Where is the HCH schedule?

Jeff Silverman and I rearranged our responsibilities this year in an effort to take some of the multitasking burden off my shoulders. A more honest way of putting this would be to say that he took a lot more of the burden on himself and freed me to do my day job and the other handful of moonlighting things I do APART from HCH in the long runup to this year's event. Preparing the schedule is one of the responsibilities that got shifted from me to him.

The overall shift in responsibilities has in general worked extremely well, but in this particular case it has meant that there's been a delay. (Another way of putting this would be to say that although he and I are both detail-oriented, anal-retentive SOB's, I'm more psychotic than he is about certain time-sensitive things. Being psychotic is sometimes good and sometimes bad.) It's also meant that there's been a discrepancy between the date he and I both set and went public with for posting of this year's schedule--April 1st--and what we've actually delivered in the way of a schedule, which is nothing so far.

Have no fear! He and I spoke yesterday and he insists that the schedule is forthcoming shortly. Everything else for HCH is moving along exceedingly well. Registrations are excellent. All the contracts have been inked; deposits have been paid. There's plenty of money in the bank. It's going to be a great event. AND, much to my relief, I'll have quite a bit more time just to hang out and talk harp. In particular, I'll be hanging out at Foxfire Ranch on Friday afternoon, 5/18, from noon to 3. Jeff assures me that I will have no responsibilities other than to just...hang out. Talk harp. Play a little. Talk more harp. Be hauled into photos. Autograph harps. Listen to your stories about harps. Tell stories about harmonica players. Etc.

So please make a point of arriving early and hanging out. I plan to do a lot more hanging out this year and a lot less running around like a haggard red rooster about to get its head chopped off. The low point was surely the moment in 2010, just before headliner Billy Branch was about to go on, when I was, in rapid sequence:

--plugging Billy's mic into my old Bassman and adjusting the dials

--telling Billy "You'll be playing with the Bill Perry Band and they don't have a bass player...that's no big thing down here in Mississippi"

--standing there as Billy groaned, "No bass! How the hell can I play Chicago blues with no bass??! Don't do this to me, Adam!"

--racing off through the crowd to find Willie Johnson, a friend from Ole Miss (he's on staff) who plays bass, and saying, "Willie, I'll throw you $100, please play bass with Billy!"

--racing back to the stage to tell Billy "I got you a bass! You've got a bass!"

--racing off to find Billy the towel and the bottle of water that he then requested.

--adjusting the sound system as Billy and the band kicked into gear.

After that, I just slumped in the front seat of my truck, watching his set and drinking bourbon straight from the bottle. I put out half a dozen fires in four-and-a-half minutes, which is surely some kind of record.

Never again! Jeff and I have reorganized. I'm going to have fun this year. I'm going to teach, play, MC, interview a couple of headliners, shake hands, hang out, watch the shows, and talk harp with y'all. That's all. I'm not involved with the production side. And that's a promise. If you attend and you notice that I seem to be forgetting about this promise, please say something to me! I will instantly go to Jeff and we will engage in further on-the-spot reorganization so that I am free to keep my promise.

I will arrive in Memphis around noon, get my rental car, stop at the Catfish Cabin then drive to Tunica, MS to play craps before going to Oxford. Either I'll get the blues from losing or I'll make a few bucks and be happy.

Oh, you meant the event schedule... Sorry I can't help with that.
