last evening found me on a stage with a hill country acoustic (mostly) player. we had behind us the most rudimentary of drum sets, one snare and a suitcase with a bass drum pedal attached to it. Bill had his small gibson reissue amp out along with 3 guitars, among them one of his CBG's. i had my silvertone and a cm bullet mic along with my case of harps.

this was no ordinary gig, it was an inaugural gig for Bill, myself, and a new guy on the drums behind us. not just that but it was a lot of new material for me. we had rehearsed on saturday but this was much bigger. i got to sing about 1/3 of the songs we did. played harp on all of it over 2 sets and only got lost once or twice!

but the main thing was, Bill began laying down some really hypnotic grooves once we were warmed up, and the crowd got infected. dancing hypnozombies. and in the middle of it was me and Bill and Major, doing really wild stuff on our instruments.
maybe after i rest a while i can explain better. suffice for now to say, i pulled out most of my tricks over the course of the evening, even going to 3 positions in a singly song. more later.

Well jbone, with two of your cd's in my collection and awaiting the next one you make, I'm not surprised.

Sarge, i have had a bit of sleep since that post.

this was one of those times when things just sort of meshed between the guys on stage and each other on their instruments and as a bigger picture, the crowd responded to what we were doing in a really incredible way. i guess one way to say it would be it was a truly essential and successful performance. we each of us got off into putting something out there and a good percentage of the crowd "got it" and gave it back to us. ynergy happened.

i noticed today at work, not only was my voice stretched out quite a lot but my chest and ribs were sore like they have seldom been. this was from playing my butt off and singing loud through my harp mic and amp, which did lend a real authentic element to what we were doing. it feels much better 24 hours after the show.

SYNergy i meant to say. at 36 hours after the gig- with inventory at the job in between as well- i am still kind of reeling from the effort and the high i was on thursday night. this is a music high.
we had a sax guy sit in on a couple of songs and also someone sat down at the grand piano right beside my chair on some of the second set. it all added up to something greater than the sum of its parts.

i'm hoping there is some good tape or video of at least part of it. stay tuned.
