A very sad day. Thanks for posting David. This is the first I heard about it.

Earl's playing was big influence on me growing up and learning to play the 5 string Banjo. My father had many of the Flatt and Scruggs albums. We even named our family mutt "Scruggs" after him. I had an instructor for a short time that used to come over and teach me licks who always called him "Earl".

The last time I got to hear him play was at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in S.F. last year. He could still pick the @#$% out of that 5 string.

He will be missed by many.

I loved it when they were on the Beverly Hillbilly's and Jed would cut the rug when they played.

A truly wonderful original in American music--sad that he is gone from our lives now. RIP, Earl. . .

A sad day indeed. He was my inspiration during the urban cowboy days of the 70's.
I learned to play 5string because of him. I stil use this same fingerpicking techniques playing guitar. He influenced so many.
I was picking some tune at the Carlisle bluegrass festival in the parking lot one year with some guitar player and wasn't until I was done did I realize he was standing there with one of his kids. He was playing that weekend and happened to hear us and headed over.
He applauded then offered me some advice in my finger rolls, shook my hand then just as easily strolled away. It was a magical moment never to be forgotten.

Earl Scruggs was one of the best banjo players ever. I think he appeared on Hee Haw more than a few times (a great show, BTW - I highly recommend the DVD series, there is some great music and comedy on them, beats what is on TV today). Always had a big smile on his face.

The Beverly Hillbillies episode that I will always remember is when Flatt and Scruggs came out to California to cut a commercial for Foggy Mountain Soap. (I think it was Granny's soap or something).

"Oh, the best dern soap is Foggy Mountain Soap, it gets your clothes much whiter...."

Fresh Air re broadcast this interview with Earl From 2003. Was nice to hear his voice & pickin' this morning. His wife even comes on the air and mentions how she wasn't so sure they should take the Beverly Hillbilly's gig.
