I'm interested in recording audio and video of myself, mainly to track how I'm doing over time. What basic equipment will get me started, without too much financial pain?

@John, before you go down the expensive road of gear acquisition you can get perfectly acceptable results with either a mobile phone which can record video or a laptop which has a built in webcam.

If you want to go a step further there are many many combinations of set-up you could go for but you did say without causing too much financial pain.

If finance is an issue, do you really need video? Sound would be enough to keep as a record and you probably have all you need for that already if you are using a computer.

for just audio, get a zoom h2 plus a big memory card, for less than $200. for video, instead get a zoom q3hd plus a bigger memory card, for around $300.

add a mic stand or small tripod and you're set.

it's debatable whether you really need video for this purpose. but if you think you'll end up wanting it, it's cheaper to buy the q3hd now and use it for audio and video than to buy an h2 now, and then a q3hd later. at that point your h2 is a paperweight, since there's no need for both.

The thing with webcams and build in mics they record no bottom. To check your progress on a technical level I think it will do just fine.If you want to know how your tone is you need the recording to sound more like it actually sounds.

Buying a(cheap) vocal mic will make a whole lot of difference. For 20$ on ebay you can get started. I've never tried recording the sound appart from video. I've no webcam, but it shouldnt be too hard.
