A trip to Mecca (no offense meant!). I'll be working during the day, and have a gig Tuesday night. Other than that, where are the best places to see, hear, play, etc.? It's the city of my parents' birth, but I know little about the blues scene there, other than what happened in the 1950's.

If you arrive on Monday, go to Artis's on the south side to see Billy Branch & the Sons of Blues.

you should go pay your respects to willie dixon at his blue heaven memorial. i think it is across the street from where chess records was which might be a blues museum.

@eharp, It is in the chess building (2120 S. Michigan Ave). The tiny park is on the left side of the building. They host blues events all the time so Definitely check them out.

If this is like a pilgrimage for you, that building is a MUST. Here are simple directions from Union Station:

Go south from Union Station and take "W. Jackson Blvd" East past the Sears tower to "S. Michigan Ave." Go South. Follow that until you hit "E. 21st st." Keep going straight and the Chess building and park will be on your right before the next street. You can't miss it, it is the oldest building on that street.

Chicago has Fantastic museums. Don't leave without visiting them:

These are my favorites:

Adler Planetarium
Field Museum
Shedd Aquarium
MSI
Art Institute

The first three are right next to Solder Field (Chicago Bears Stadium).

Okay, here's a pretty decent itinerary going from south to north:

Reggie's Music Joint 2105 S. State
Buddy Guy's Legends 700 S. Michigan
Andy's Jazz Club 11 E. Hubbard
House of Blues 329 N. Dearborn
Blue Chicago 536 N. Clark
Second City 1616 N. Wells (comedy)
B.L.U.E.S Chicago 2519 N. Halsted
Kingston Mines 2548 N. Halsted

I can add more if needed but this is a good start.

Many Sundays Dave Waldman, Scott Dirks and friends have a blues jam at the Woodlawn Tap (also called Jimmy's) on the south side from 4 to 6 pm. These guys know Chicago blues. Very casual and friendly, low volume. Old guys come by. My favorite jam by far.

Jam at the Harlem Avenue Lounge on Tuesday night. There is a White Castle next door.

Thanks all! A visit to Chess is definitely in the plan. Anyone aware of any jams on Wednesdays? I'll be gigging on Tuesday and rehearsing Sunday and Monday nights...

Agreed. But are there a lot of blues clubs that don't charge admission and sell t-shirts? Imho, any club that promotes live music is okay by me.
