Hey Guys! How do you tongue (ta ta ta) overblows? I've tried throat popping (ka ka ka). Is that correct?

Both ways work, even alternating..takataka.
Mouth shape is the same for both. Don't think pop..just think redirecting the airflow off the roof of your mouth by getnly change airflow direction with the throat.

Thing is when I overblow my tongue is well back in my mouth and when I go to (ta) tongue the note, the overblow goes too. I can't start the overblow with a (ta).

As you were. Yes I can but it's not so strong.

You could try articulating (tooka tooka)....Nah just kidding:)

Although I articulate with my tongue quite a bit in my playing, I don't sense my tongue articulating any particular ta or ka shapings.

When I ob the tip of my toungue rests lightly against the back of my lower teeth, the middle sides of my tongue are higher and resting on the inside of my upper teeth sort of forming a loose seal. With my tongue remaining in this position I arch the top of my tongue up slightly and this compresses the air in the top of my mouth.

It is this pressurised air pocket directed into the hole that produces my overblow at least.

For me I have to create that pressure for the overblow to work.

To visualise this...If you seal your lips over the top of an empty bottle and blow lightly you will feel a resistance in air pressure. This is slightly what it feels like, the pressurised air causes the blow reed to stall and allows the draw reed to sound the overblow.

It may be different for others as we all have our individual methods, but this is what works for me.

Thanks GOPA. Yeah my tongue is touching the back of my lower teeth also (I think). But If I want a sharp attack I need to move it and the OB goes too. My OB's start soft then ramp up quickly if that makes sense.

Yes Tooka. I found the same when I started to get them in that I needed a steady build-up to create the necessary pressure. So that rather than the OB just occuring it was at first soft then as the pressure built the OB got stronger.

When I started improving I began to produce the ob first hit and steady but I still found that there was a slight delay in the ob being produced as I was creating the necessary air pressure.

So in other words the ob stood out in a riff containing conventional notes because of the slight pause in producing the OB. More practice has started to smooth this out.
