Recently I Have done my first home-made harp mic. I use a telephone speaker for element and the sound is great, highly distorted. I love it.
Soon I`ve uploading some audio and pics of the mic, in a how-to-do post.
But, there is a problem. There is no Bass in the souns that it makes, even in a bass amp I can“t get de low register of the harp sound low (whit a G harp).
I search in Ebay and I foun this element:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASTATIC-D104-REPLACEMENT-MIC-MICROPHONE-ELEMENT-/180648364075?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0f7b482b
It is good for harp? It is definetly better than the telephone speaker, but it is a god element by it self?
Thx!

The original D-104 element is too big for harp mics. DOn't know about that replacement but it looks like one of the el-cheapo current japanese crystals - won't have much sound.
As for bass - the harmonica just doesn't make notes that are really considered bass notes. A tube amp will literally manufacture bass "overtones" or harmonics when its preamp section is properly driven by a hot distorted mic signal -= which in turn comes from cupping a good hot element (like the elements RHarley mentioned above) ---------- /Greg

rharley5652,
Those elements are way of my budget, any cheaper suggestions?
Greg, As for de "bass" sound, I have play whit a cheap vocal mic (4 dollars or so) conected to my bass amp, and I can really hear a lower sound in the first octave. Thats is watt I meant for "low".
Thx a lot for your help!

The old crystals aren't just too big, but more importantly, they're WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too hot to use in any amp you could ever find to the point that unless you've got something like a Kinder AFB, you can't even turn the amp on even at the lowest volume point without the biggest feedback nightmare in the world and crystals that are that powerful usually tend to have extremely powerful bottom end response and so just on that alone I wouldn't recommend it at all. Besides, it would make things idiodically distorted to the point that every note is so oversaturated that you lose definition in everything you play and makes things sound horrible, and that's being nice about it. Those D-104's are the top prized mics for ham radio operators even to this day. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
