Hi guys. I'm trying to dive into Kim Wilson's catalogue, and I'd like to know where to start. I bought Tigerman a couple weeks ago, but I was pretty disappointed to find out that there is only harp on about half the album. The harp playing is incredible, obviously. I just wish there was more. I'm especially attracted to the song "Come Back Baby." The big, jagged, octave style playing in this song really gets me. Where should I go next?

Ludella, Live in Bordeaux or My Blues. Those are the first ones that come to mind.

"That's Life" would be one of my "desert island discs" for sure. Consistently sweet harp tone right accross the album, similar to "Come Back Baby" (harp sounds on Tigerman seem more varied). Acoustic, LW style, on "She's My Baby" is to die for. Great material.
...it's also a "Kim Wilson album", rather than an album he plays on...;-p (Seriously though, Ludella IS a great example of his playing).

Here's a thread from some time ago about Wilson's work as a sideman. There are some great albums mentioned here. http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/2256139.htm

Of the ones I heard mine would be Smokin' Joint. Haven't heard Ludella.

Ludella (which was recorded live at Antone's) is insanely killer.
Another GREAT disc is "The Memphis Barbecue Sessions" by Big Jack Johnson. Be warned, though: If you're looking for amped up, Chicago-style harp, this one's all acoustic. Kim's playing is incredible. Here's a taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Xyzxkds0U

@MN "Ludella (which was recorded live at Antone's) is insanely killer." It's about half & half live & studio recordings, from memory. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Ludella would be number one -produced and mixed by Kim Wilson. A close second would be "Lookin' For Trouble"- "Tortured" features some of the most killer Chromatic harp I have ever heard- "Money,Marbles and Chalk" is a great slow blues in 2nd position, and "Hurt On Me" is a killer 3rd position tune. Surprisingly,a lot of material from "High Water" is featured on "Lookin' For Trouble"-repackaged and updated as only Kim can. I had dinner with Kim one night-he signed my copy of "High Water" and stated "that was one of the best recordings I ever did-that band was killer!". I would also suggest "Smokin' Joint Volume 2"-it features alot of cuts "My Blues" performed live-

Kim is not on all the cuts, but Jimmy Rogers' last album, "Blues, Blues, Blues", also has great KW stuff.

As far as the T-birds, it's the early stuff on Chrysalis for me. I even love the covers:

If you don't want to spring for four albums, there's a cool compilation called "Early Bird Special".

The absolute best modern day release of Chicago blues is Barrelhouse Chuck's GOT MY EYES ON YOU and Kim Wilson plays lights out throughout the disc. Made me forget LUDELLA. That's how good his work is here. ---------- Ricky B http://bushdogblues.blogspot.com RIVER BOTTOM BLUES--crime novel for blues fans at Amazon, Barking Rain Press & the blog

Also check out "Live in Aptos". Kim with Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn and Larry Taylor (sorry I can't remember the drummers name offhand). I much prefer Kim's live albums over the studio stuff.
