yeah another newb..

Anyway, I've built a couple of the cheap diy mics from ideas from this site and I thank everyone.

So I bought the Apex 127 (Bushman torpedo) for cheap at a local music store and I want to mod it. I got a nos shure R5 element to put in it. Its the complete with the gasket and a black covering on the back. The gasket on it is just a fuzz to big to go down in the shell. I havent seen one like that.
All to ask if I need to remove the black backing and how should I handle the gasket issue.

If this is one of those lame newb topics sorry. if there is another forum better for this type of question give me a link.
thanks

Hi - the gasket is required to

a) provide front to back acoustic isolation
b) hold the element securely
c) provide shock absorption.

You usually can trim the existing gasket with a very sharp knife (like a razor blade or X-acto knife.

As for the "black backing" - do you mean the cloth tape covering the coil on the rear of the element? With silver letters on it? Do NOT remove that. It establishes the date of manufacture and model of the element - and removing it will reduce the element's value.

Thanks for the reply.

This is my element

This doesnt look like the ones I've typically seen. It has 2 leads coming out of the black housing on the back.

Ahh, sorry I misunderstood you. You have a good element there, I have had some like that. The black rear cover is unusual - usually they're clear (when they are there at all.) Yes, you need to remove it. Those wires are the actual element leads, so they need to be bent up straight and then the plastic part can be lifted off of them - just be careful not to stress those leads.

whew..I was getting concerned that I had screwed myself over somehow. Thanks for the relief.
Your site is awesome btw, that Bushman mic you have on your site in the mods section is actually my inspiration to do this. I think I'm going to go with a 1/4" jack first instead of the screw on connector, mainly because thats what I have. If its not out of line could I ask if you have a recomendation for how far I should put the element in the shell? I was thinking about 1/3 down the vents or should I get it all the way down.

Thanks again for helping out a newb tinker-er..
