Howdy forum,Its been awhile,I had to take a break was getting to stressed out and thought I should take a break from the net,I had a job until last week, and bought some new gear, 1. Harbinger 60 watt PA (yes I know its small I allmost got the 120 watt but was low on money, and the words of Walter tore,Came to me play quiet and draw em in,so I got the 60 watt;-) 2.Fender supechamp XD cool 15 watt tube amp with 16 voices and 14 effects 3.Fender Squier afinity strat I know its a squier but I must say its as nice as the 2 mexican strats I used to have and a whole lot cheaper 4.SM 48 vocal mic there supposed to be a good mic like the SM58 but more economical, sure beats the $15 nady i was using 5. mp3 player hey dont laugh I know I was the last person on earth to get one,but these things are cool, untill the driver gets lost and cant seem to find it;-) 6.Hohner blue midnight harp hey theses arnt to bad Im going to get a couple more
My question is I got the setup for guitar and doing the 1man band ,But ive been thinking hey this amp aint to bad for harp but tends to feedback somewhat with my bullet mic, I heard I could change out the preamp tubes,to lower gain,I might do that but would still like to use it for guitar about as much,I dont use alot of gain when I play guitar so would the tube swap work for both, and If so what tubes do you recomend?Im also thinking about switching the speaker ,I ve heard the rajon cajon works well with it,But Im not sure if it would be a good harp speaker and do you recomend any setp that would handle both,I have miced the amp with my PA and also ran the line out, just today Im trying to get used to how to set it up,I have lots of firguring out to do.but is it feasable to take a small PA and the amp to a gig,Im just curious as to how that might work,And does anybody have any recomendations or settings I might look into, any help is greatly apreaciated, thanks,

I saw on utube a harp player used a weber alnico speaker on the superchamp XD,And said it was a good swap for harp,I looked at Musicains friend and the weber is cheaper than the rajon cajon, but would it work better for both guitar and harp, compared to the rajon cajon ,Its only a 15 watt speaker which is the same as the amp,the rajon cajon I think is alot more watts ,would that be good or bad for what Im trying to build? again thanks ---------- Hobostubs

Hey Stubs, I can't help you with your gear problem, but just wanted to let you know that I have never owned an mp3 player, so don't feel bad. ---------- Wisdom does not always come with old age. Sometimes old age arrives alone.

Man I sure could use some advise,,Im about to spend the last bit of my money I have probelly for awhile,And Im not sure if Im getting what I need,Im fixing to order the 12Au7 preamp tube,Ive heard they are good to help lower gain some,Thats decided but what im not sure of yet is I thought about getting the Weber signiture series 10' Alnica speaker Im thinking its got a smaller magnet than alot of speakers,I bought a amp video of Adams a couple years ago and I remember him saying that for harp alighter magnet was better,My question is would it still be a decent guitar amp, thats its main job,I dont need alot of gain but some,Its around $45 and I was wonder would it be worth my limited funds to go ahead with the speaker switch,Or for a dual purpose amp that Im wanting,Or would it be better to keep the stock fender speaker and just change the preamp tube?the rajon cajon is still a option but its about double in price and its probelly got a bigger magnet I know its rated for more watts than 15 watt of the weber ,I think its around a 100 watts give or take,Ive heard the super champXD at high volumes for guitar do'es better with the rajon cajon speaker or one of similar specs, But again Im trying to get use as a guitar amp and harp amp, something tells me I should just get the preamp tube and stick with the middle ground stock speaker, but If the weber would be a much better setup for both then I would like to change it,again any help is greatly apreaciated thanks ---------- Hobostubs

I'd play it as is until you break in the stock speaker atleast a litlle.
As for the pre amp tube. Are you having terrible feedback problems?
12au7 is a huge loss in output for a small amp. I'd be more inclined to say 5751 12at7 or 12ay7 at most for dropping down. The 12ax7 may or may not be the better tube. JJ 12ax7 is a slightly lower gain tube than many other same tube. Costs like 10 bucks at most music stores.
Lowering the preamp gain factor can be fatal to guitar tone depending on what you like.

thanks Willspear,I probelly will just keep the stock speaker for now,I havent even really cranked it good yet so,I probelly am jumping the gun with that idea, and it will Save me some money,I dont play using but just a hair Over drive and sometimes clean alot,But it is mainly for guitar ,I was wondering couldnt a person have a couple different pre amp tubes and just switch them as needed,or is that a bad idea .This is my 1st tube amp and dont know much about them. ---------- Hobostubs

You could do that. But I am one for not costa tly changing tubes in a given amp. Don't really know how the tube sockets are mounted in the new champ but pulling and re installing tubes all the time is pretty rough on some of the board mounted tube sockets over time.
They could be chassis mounted but I wouldnt think so
I am not saying don't change tubes but really the path of least resistance is often the best.

Hi Hobostubs, that amp is a ss preamp. i know it has a 12ax7, but its not actually the preamp. i have a vibrochamp xd which is a similiar unit in some respects. if you only use the 'clean' channel i think you will have a lot less trouble with feedback. i believe the clean channel is actually the very same preamp voice as the voice number 4, the 'clean silverface' voice(edit: its actually what they call 'clean blackface'). that voice is also relatively low gain and gives the least feedback problems.
voice 1 is not too bad, voice 2 (the bassman voice) is a bit dodgy, but manageable if you keep the gain quite low and are careful with the volume and with where you put the mic. voice 3 (overdriven tweed) is a great sound but feeds back extremely easily. i steer clear of it.
anyway, i think you can get some good harp sound out of the clean channel with gain on 3 or 4 and volume maybe as high as 6...maybe a little more...and teh delay has some usable settings, as does the reverb. ive even used the reverb+delay and thought it was ok.
other than that i think the bassman voice can also be quite usable at recording studio volumes. not that it sounds much like a bassman, through the 8"speaker in my vibrochamp...
but the main thing is there's no point changing the 12ax7, and avoid those hi-gain voices for the harpmic.
ok, i hope some of this is useful, cheers man Dave

cool. i should mention that David Barrett is quite keen on the Superchamp XD as the bang-for-buck mid-size harp amp he recommends to his students. i saw him demo it..i remember he liked the clean channel, treble on 0, bass on 10...thinks its a bit bright even on that setting, he was trying to compensate by getting a real airtight cup happening. i also just realised the clean channel on the SC is just driven by volume 1. the gain control only relates to volume 2 and the voiced channel.
