I just noticed that 1847 reed plates sell for around $60 and Session Steel reed plates sell for about $30. What's the difference between the two, anyone know?

The 1847 reed plates go on a sandwich style design which means that the reed plates are exposed and sit on a flat comb. The Session Steel reed plates sit inside an ABS molded plastic comb with a ridge around it.
The 1847 plates have a groove or a ridge cut along the front which help seat the covers so there is a little extra labor.
However, Dougharps said it best, though. They go on different harps and the prices match the sale price of the harp.
Seydel set the price on the Session Steel lower to make it more affordable for players.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought the 1847 plates were made to tighter tolerences and received additional care in the factory set up. So its like comparing Crossover to MB1896/SP20 plates, which have a similar price difference.

A440, Seydel manufactures both the Session Steel and the 1847 to the same specifications.
Replacement reed plates are just one of the ways Seydel seeks to market to the serious player and the gigging musician.
Seydel has also invested significantly in repair technicians who offer economical reed replacements.
We are set up to to replace reeds at a price that is less than the cost of full sets of plates. Many of my warranty and factory repairs last longer than the original reeds.

Seydel SS reeds last a long time but not forever. I have used GMaj7's services to repair a few of my 1847's. His service was fast and very reasonably priced. I'll never buy a whole reed plate again. ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

Greg, You must like the 1847s. I have an 1847 and a Crossover in A and they are completely different sounding and playing harps.
