I have a Promaster in A that had a dud note so instead of working on it (I'm all thumbs) I put in a new set of plates. On the new plates all notes are in tune but the 3B is unresponsive eg stalls on me. It works fine blown in isolation but from a 3D to 3B it stalls. I have opened it up and eased the 3B & it plinks ok. I try it without the coverplates and it is fine & is ok when holding the coverplates in position. But as soon as I fasten the cover plates it again stalls. I have had it apart 3 times now.

Any suggestions?

OT. the spam prevention code lately is stopping every 1st effort I make to post. 2nd time works ok.

Huh. That is interesting, Aussiesucker. The only thing I can think is maybe loosening the screws closest to the 3-hole just a hair's breadth; it's worked for me once or twice.

Have you tried widening the gap of the reed slightly? I've had the same problem at times and this seems to fix it.

Thanks scrybe314. Problem sort of solved. Going on your lead I have isolated it to the coverplates. Leaving the covers slightly loose it places less pressure on the reedplate. Looking through the back the coverplates are uneven along the front edge, the edge that slots into the reedplate. It's not visible front on as the uneven edge is all slotted in the reed plate. Looking at the coverplates on a flat surface it is easy to see how when even lightly tightened excessive pressure is placed above the 3B reed. It now works fine but there is daylight between the cover & reedplate on the low end above holes 1 & 2. A file will fix this...I hope.
Thanks.

Make sure the reed plate screws are tightened evenly and just snug-not too tight.

@Leatherlips> increasing the gap was my first option. It didn't alter the situation.

@Tuckster? I am aware of not over tightening. I have taken plenty of harps apart & altered tunings etc but I'm really a clumsy clod when it comes to fiddly things and I don't enjoy the task.

I was sort of amused at the response of the 3B ie perfect in isolation with any breath pressure but coming in off a 3D the note hesitated to respond. And all this caused by a minutely uneven front edge on the top cover plate. It's fixed thanks to scrybe314s lead.

I'm new to harmonica and only bought ten or so but the only real dud I've had is a Bb promaster. I have tried open gaps and all kinds I manoeuvres but it still crappy in the low end on blow one and three.

A promaster is NOT a cheap harp so I'm really disappointed. I I'm not found of the coverplates or aluminium comb either so that's that. I have now bought a MBD in Bb and it plays like a dream after basic gapping. Cost me about 5 bucks less than the promaster too.

I'm very hesistant to spend any more dough on a Suzuki but I know that a lot of folks here loves them so maybe I'll gamble on a manji or a harpmaster down the road.

I have four Promasters, two Manjis, and I broke an Overdrive. All played very nicely. The only issue I have is the Promaster in A. I have a little congestive heart failure, so sometimes I'm a little short of breath. I find that the Promaster in A leaves me short of breath on a regular basis, albeit it doesn't seem appreciably more difficult to play. Sp20, Marine Band, Crossover in A, no problem.

Try the Harpmaster - you won't be disappointed. A very nice little harp for the money...IMO.
