Since I quit playing full time I have been a special education teacher. Today we moved into a 20 year dream of mine- a complete commercial kitchen. I teach Mentally Handicapped high school students life skills, vocational skills, and run several businesses with them to learn these skills (homemade dog/horse treats, artisian breads, muffins, cookies, pizzas, bagels). This room is all to code so we can now start legally selling the human products to the public. 7 local stores already carry our horse and dog biscuits. Soon we will be selling our line of people food to central Ohio. My students will always require adult support. Most will live in group homes. My program teaches them the skills needed to be semi- independent, work a job, and take the finacial burden off society and carry their own weight. Here is an article with pictures the local paper did today. I am as high as when I was sitting onstage with guys like Lightning Hopkins! It is a blessing to have found a career that I am so passionate about that supports my music. Walter

PS: we do mail order all over the country with the dog biscuits so if anyone is intersted in some let me know.

Honkin On Bobo: thanks. I posted it to share that people with cognitive disabilities have more potential than we give them credit for. 99.99999% of schools today, in classes like mine, continue to do 1-2nd grade academics all day with these kids. Unfortunately there are no office jobs out there for skills at this level and we produce a population that is so disabled that they are in situations most/all of their adult life where they are baby sat and depend on society to care for them till their death. This means taxspayers money........

Most people are not around this population enough to know what is going on. My profession lives in make believe with this group- like they are magically going to get better when they graduate high school. Unfortunately no magic happens and they end up sitting in boredom most of their lives. I share this as a model of hope. My students have the option to go on to sheltered county work shops(do simple piece meal assembly work for a couple dollars a day) and if they possess basic work/social skills, this agency can get them legitimate work in the community. Many of my students go on to independent work in private businesses in the community. The work is simple, repititous, and physical, but they love it. I have a masters degree and get dirty all day and love it because it helps these kids move forward to adulthood with success. I am as passionate with this field as I am with Spontobeat! Walter
