Thanks Michael: Kepp the lessons coming. I'll have to listen to this a couple times though. I get a little lost when at 00:45 you talk about the Dorian mode of the CMaj. scale starts on D and has all C scale notes ( or all white keys ). Then you talk later about the C Dorian scale, stats on C and you flat the the third. I'm reading something into the first part and it may be the word Mode. I love theory for I read music ( somewhat ) and play a little keys and Chromatic Harmonica. Also just bought a Tenor Sax. So keep em comin ! ---------- And I Thank You !! K.C. castlehomes69@yahoo.com
KC There are twelve major scales. Each scale has a mode called the Dorian scale. Each dorian scale uses the same notes as its respective major scale. The dorian scale always starts on the second note of the respective major scale. Major scales Dorian scales C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C D C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C# D# aka Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db Eb D E F# G A B C# D E F# G A B C# D E Eb F G Ab Bb C D Eb F G Ab Bb C D Eb F F# G# A# B C# D# E# F# G# A# B C# D# E# F# G# aka Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F Gb Ab A B C# D E F# G# A B C# D E F# G# A B Bb C D Eb F G A Bb C D Eb F G A Bb C B C# D# E F# G# A# B C# D# E F# G# A# B C#
Notice how each dorian scale on the right has the same notes as the major scale on the left? They are modes of one another.
However if you look at the first two:
C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C D
The major scale on the left is in the key of C. The dorian scale on the right is in the key of D. To get the correct feeling that each scale provides you have to have the rhythm players play in the key of C major for the left scale and in the key of D minor or D blues for the right scale.
Therefore is you take the first major scale that begins with C and you take the Dorian scale that begins with C (second from bottom a mode of Bb major) you get these two scales:
C major C Dorian C D EF G A B C C D Eb F G A Bb C 3 7 3b 7b
To get the feeling of the left major scale the band has to play in the key C major. To get the feeling of the right dorian scale the band has to play in the key of C minor or a blues in the key of C.
What is the difference between the two scales? The 3rd and 7th note from the major scale has been flattened to give us the Eb and Bb in the dorian scale.
To get the dorain feeling in any key, take the major scale of that key and flat the third and seventh notes. Hope that helps.
Michael: This is great and I do understand. I am better when face to face and having a key board in front of us. My brain still want to tell me that yes; When we look at the first two . That the Dorian scale being in the key of "D", that , the key of "D" should have two Flats/Sharps. This example show it having all white keys. I know its just me. I'm reading more into than probably needs to be. Just let it a lone and play it., because I do understand that you flat the third and the 7th, then you get the correct Key of "D". Sorry for making it so difficult. This is why Jimi Lee tells me to go back to school for Theory 1 and 2 P.S. This is the kinda stuff I save to my favorites. Thanks Keep em comin ! ---------- And I Thank You !! K.C. castlehomes69@yahoo.com
