... may well be the response, but I still thought it would be an interesting question for you regular gigging players.

The question (of course) is how much can a harp player expect to earn if he joins (or forms) a band?

I suspect it depends on many variables, including size of venues played (eg 100/ 600/ 1200) and country (eg uk/ usa/ australia) and band set-up.

I hope that those 'in the know' may throw back some 'guidelines' such as:
a) Club with 600 audience should pay the band 'x' in uk.
b) Player joining band playing small gigs (max 200) might expect 'y' in usa.

I should also add that I have no specific need to know this, but simply thought it may be a good topic to enlighten those stay at home types! It is also NOT a straight question to find out how much YOU earn, so feel free to be general in your responses.

I think round here [W. midlands UK] bands get about £50 a head for pub gigs.

South Florida, here. I've run into an average of 300-400 for big bars paying no-name bands and going down from there. Sometimes you'll get a cut of the door and split it amongst the band. Sometimes you'll get half off beer. And, like billy_shines said, sometimes you'll get a "Good job" and an expectant glance towards the door.

It seems to vary a lot for the band I'm in. Best paying gig's are birthday parties, wedding etc. which we charge around £500. At bars etc. we often get a share of the door, which can work out around £100 – £500 depending on the size of the venue. Sometimes we play in the corner of the pub all night for food and beer (these are sometimes my favourite gigs to play). – I don't sing, I just play harmonica with these guys. All band members get a equal cut of the takings.
