@ Toddlgreene, just picked up a mint condition EV 631B on the Internet for $22.00 total, shipped with the cord and box. Not one mark on it, I don't think it had ever been used. I don't think the seller knew what he had. Anyway, what kind of amp for this mic to get optimum sound? I know you said earlier that the 631B is your go-to mic.

Good catch! I would say try it through everything, of course, as personal opinions differ, but I like it thru Bassmans and Sonny Jrs, where the bottom end will really move the speakers for some good low-end punch! The one thing it lacks and I need to get Greg H to build is one of his in-line volume controls.
Does yours have the magnetic off/on swtch? I have found that mine seems to have become demagnetized, and no longer fully shuts off the signal. In case you didn't realize, you can just snap that off and the mic is always on. Change your mind, and it'll snap right back on.
Also, experiment with how you hold it:the small diameter of the head of the mic lends itself well to the 'prayer' style-put the mic's head between the heels of your hand, and you will be able to clasp your hands just like you would play acoustically.
Smoky Greenwell plays that way, and he tried my mic and loved it, and bought a few of them. Since that meeting, when he and I discussed his holding method, the mic and everything else under the sun, I've played that way with this mic.
Let me know how it works for you!

Also, check the data sheet to see how yours is set up. Definitely go for the high impedance setup. ---------- Todd L. Greene

It is wired Hi-Z, although it is a dual Z mic. I will post some photos. This mic is BRAND NEW, still had the warranty card in the box. It has the magnetic on-off switch. It has a 3 pin jack from the factory.

Looks nice-just as mine did, and still pretty much does. It's a very durable mic. The fact that you got a cable with it(if it's at least a 10-15 footer)adds another 20$ to it. Let us know how it sounds. ---------- Todd L. Greene

So, what do you think of the 631B? ---------- Todd L. Greene

I don't have a tube amp that will do this mic justice, yet. My amp is solid state. But within the next week or two I will be plugging it into a Bassman and I'll let you know.

I have an '80's vintage Peavey Special (120 watts) with a 12 inch Scorpion speaker. I was sick earlier in the week and haven't plugged it in to test yet, but I am sure it will scream. Just don't think that it is optimum sound Todd is talking about.

@ toddlgreene, I'm a believer (RIP Davy Jones by the way). My EV 631B is probably my go-to microphone right now, and I have two other Hi-Z mics in my case to choose from. It doesn't matter if it is a tube amp, solid state, or a P.A. system. This microphone adapts to any application. Good low end, and not too hot like some other EV high impedance mics when put through the same rig. I'm so glad I have one, and a mint condition one at that. Thanks.
P.S. I am finding that the EV 606 is a sleeper of a bullet mic. Many prefer the 605, but the HI-Z 606 is a nice bullet mic as well, although it doesn't have the punch that some others do.

Glad you like that 631B! I'll be out playing a gig tonight with local guitarist Jeff Chaz, and I'll of course be trotting out my trusty 631B.
I don't think I've ever seen or played thru a 606, but I like just about every EV mic I've come across for harp. ---------- Todd L. Greene

I have a 606, and I do not really like it. The sound seems a little thin to me. I also have a 607, which is real bright and thin. I also have a 638 and a 641, which are both dynamite mics, they are the same except that the 641 is longer with an on off switch. I installed a volume control on both, and they work well. I also have an RE10 which has gobs of low end, but is low Z, and an EV631, which is Hi Z only, with a single pin connector. It actually has more low end that the RE10. I couild go on, but then you would think that I like mics. ----------

@ Harvey - the 606 is thinner, but it all depends on what you are playing through. I went through a P.A. system with it, and I must tell you it sounded awesome. I have a 638 too, it seems to be better suited for tube amps.
