Greetings everyone,

I hope all of you are having a good holliday season, and appreciate all of the knowledge and experiences you share on this forum. They have been a great help. My question is this. How does Mr. McCoy play his runs during that song (John Henry).

Thank you for your time and efforts7B93N

"Practice" is of course a brilliant answer. You could also download some kind of slow downer and learn how to use it. "Best practice" is one and it´s for free. Windows Media player also has a (cruder) slow down function.
Then you´ll find that it´s tough, but not impossible, to play that fast. (Quite a lot of it is repeted riffs.)

Practice is essential but sometimes a little help can...help. First off grab your d harp for some cross harp in a . The riff at 0:51 is blow 4, blow 3, draw 3 repeated at speed.
The riff at 2:37 starts with a bent to unbent draw on the 4 then a quick bend with a 'doo' sound (emphasize this note in the run) and slide to the 2 draw. Then end it by draw bend on the 3 straight to the 2 draw unbent twice. This is a very Charlie lick.
Alot of the faster runs are starting on a note, say 5 draw, then 4 draw, 5 blow 4 blow and then repeat this pattern going down the harp. The first lick I explained is just a part of this descending run played over at speed. Good Luck!
