Well i've finally done it and made the leap from Jam night to fronting a proper band singing and playing calling the shots regarding set list ,song key, solo's the whole nine yards and it was GREAT!.
Talk about in at the deep end i was asked to stand in for a singer with a local band whos wife is expecting and so he felt he could'nt commit, then the drummer droped out so a replacement was found then the bass player who also has a heart problem and a Pacemaker fell ill so a replacement was found then the lead guitarist realized he had a prior commitment so a replacement was found!.
So far so good THEN the lead guitarist said he could make it after all so we had two of em!
The gig was about an hours drive away so we set off with an hour and three quaters to spare but the guy driving got lost so we arrived with 20mins to spare.
I was introduced to the three new guys we set up, i showed em the set list, told em the song keys and got up and did it!.
I made quite a few mistakes and 3 songs in realized that i still had my camcorder in my pocket so no You Tube i'm afraid, but when we came off the club owner shook my hand and said " you were bloody great son" and he said he thought my origonal material was great so i was well chuffed.
Got back home at 12.15am went to bed and slept for about 1.30hrs then lay awake all night disecting the whole thing over and over i allready know a dozen things i'm gonna do to make it better next time and i can't wait to do it again.
Things,as they say,can only get better!

Wow! Sounds fun. Philosophical question. If you replace all the band members one by one, is it still the same band?

Good for you! Congratulations - it is a big step. Singing, playing AND properly leading the band gives you a LOT to think about on stage.

i was wondering that, too, bronze!
seems to me, you ditch the original guitar player and you got your own band!

You realize of course that you are now on that slippery slope and that life as you have known it will soon be in tatters. You have fallen victim to the Boogie Woogie Flu possibly leading to complications from the closely related Rock and Roll Disease, both afflictions for which there is no known cure. Doctors say you may get better but you'll never get well.

That is a blues song waiting to be written right there :)

@shadoe42 Thanks kindly. It's been in the book for a while, though I confess in the Incomplete section.

Funny you should say that cos i was thinking that on the night mainly because we were introduced as Spanish Battery which is the name of the band origonally booked, of whom there was only two members on stage so 3 songs in i explained to the room all about the trials and tribulations involved in getting there and told em that for one night only we were the Beta Blocker Blues Band! so called because of my dodgy ticker.
I think it was the right move to be up front about our unpreparededness ( is that even a real word?) partly because i did'nt want people leaving thinking they had just seen Spanish Batttery,(coz they're a really good well rehersed band) and also i think it gave us an easier ride.
P.S. thanks for the positve support and comments and most of all thanks to Adam, there is NO WAY that i could ever have done what i have just done without his skill as a teacher and this web site and especially this forum.

As a rule, the band name belongs to the leader.

The name of the band belongs to who is handing out the money at the end of the night.

I'm sure there are legal exceptions, But there were many nights when I played with the Gary Stewart Quintet, when Gary said to the audiance,"I want you to meet the band", and that was when we all met each other.

I have had the privilage of working with people of a caliber of talent, that they can just walk in, start playing, and the band sounds good. But it's always been Gary's band.
