Just thought I'd ask if anyone out there cares to share how dentures impacted on your harp playing. The future is getting closer for me and it's not pretty. Do I just play smooth mouth or can you adapt?

I think Oldwailer plays with a full set and it doesn't seem to hinder his playing. I assume he plays with them in? ----------

Got em, full top deck, initially when your teeth are removed there will be discomfort, once your healed up you'll be ok, maybe even better if you take them out for special effects.

Little Arthur Duncan had dentures. His music career took off in his last decade of his life.

I had all my teeth pulled at the same time and the dentures stuck in right after. I never even had to take an aspirin, but I had a very good dentist. Doesn't bother me playing. I can play straight harp without them as long as I'm not trying to bend notes. Second postion with bent notes requires that I wear my store bought teeth. ---------- Wisdom does not always come with old age. Sometimes old age arrives alone.

It works best if you have one special set made up with about four missing teeth on the upper deck and three missing on the lower--then you can get the real SBII tone. (Just kidding)
I play with a full set of dentures--it only bothers me when I try to do deep bends when the lower isn't well glued in. I've never played without the plates--I wouldn't mind being seen without them--I'm just deathly afraid of seeing myself without them. . . ----------

Thanks for the responses guys! This had me worried, what with all the embouchure talk, I didn't know what to expect.

Keep in mind that like anything else, they will take a little getting used to. Eating, speaking and anything else. But this will pass. ---------- Tommy

I have uppers that I got some years before starting to play. Don't have any problem with them at all! I have wondered if they have an effect pos. or neg. on the tone you can produce though. Duane
