Joe Frazier was one of the most feared knockout artists in the history of boxing, but now he's facing an opponent very few can KO:

all i can think of is the call, "down goes frazier! down goes frazier!"
the guy was a warrior back in the early 70's.
hopefully he has 1 more good fight in him.

I saw that on the news yesterday. Joe Frazier is a name I hadn't heard in years. I remember the battles between him and Ali and when I was a kid we had two sides among my friends. Those that would argue that Ali was the best and those who would swear Frazier would kick his ass. I got to meet Frazier once.
I hope he wins this battle.

I live near Larry Holmes now. He has a restaurant here and I also met him there. These guys are boxing history and treasures. They "are" boxing

wasnt that the origin of the rope-a-dope?

Nope, the Rope-A-Dope was used by Ali most famously in the earlier Rumble in The Jungle fight against George Foreman. It was actually much more effective against Foreman because George was a bigger guy (gets tired more easily) with bigger hands (harder to get through Ali's covering defense) who threw less accurate and more swinging type punches on the ropes than Frazier. Ali would have won the Manilla fight quicker, and taken far less punishment, had he stayed off the ropes and boxed Joe, that was the whole reason for Ali's camp negotiating such a large ring for the fight. As it was, Joe Brutalized Ali nearly every round on the ropes with powerful, accurate punches that got through Ali's covering attempts.

Yes, very sad about Joe. As a kid from Philly, who teaches Boxing (and Martial Arts) for a living, I was, and still am, a huge Joe Frazier fan. He was truly one of the great heavyweight fighters of all time, and perhaps had the most heart of them all. He said, very matter of factly at one point, "I'll fight a lion in the jungle with a toothpick" and he certainly showed that courage and determination in his fights, win or lose.

I remember when I was going to Temple University I had
to catch a trolly at broad and girard sts.
Joe had club on the corner. I would see him all the time and everybody would be waving and yelling Smokin'Joe and he would always wave back.
