I have been wanting to learn the harp in this song for a while now, but I don't know where to start. I do not have an ear for music, so I can't tell what key it is in or figure out the intro riff.
Maybe its too early in the morning. but I couldn't find the right key, and I have more than a complete set of harp keys.
That tells me that the recording may be in between pitches, which can happen alot if the song is recorded from a vinyl LP and the turntable belt is old or stretched or not adjusted correctly.
I went on Amazon.com, searched for Duster Bennett (in MP3's) and there is a version of "Jumping at Shadows" on the album "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions".
That one is in the key of A using a D-harp in 2nd position. It sounds like he is playing into a glass.
Bugsy, You will be more successfull here if you chose a C harmonica and play this in G, as per the record. But note that the chord progressions are not standard blues -- they shall not be hard to find on the net, though. (If not I can give them to you.) I remember playing this in 12th pos once in a while, but if you´re a beginner stick to 2 or why not 1?
God his singing is so amazing, white mellisima king, ever more skilled than my hero Peter Green maybe. Reminds me of Ray Charles, some of the phrases. What a guy.
As harmonicanick says, Duster was especially adept at first position playing - listen to 'Got A Tongue In Your Head!' from his debut album 'Smiling Like I'm Happy'. It's quite a piece of work which would tax a player who is just playing harp but Duster is also doing his brilliant one-man band stuff. All in all it is a great record.
He was also excellent at third position (possibly because he was a chromatic master who could play Bach pieces) and taught himself fifth position when his friend and mentor Peter Green asked him if he could play in E minor. The result can be heard on 'Trying So Hard To Forget' on Fleetwood Mac's 'Mr Wonderul': Duster is playing a C harp in E minor.
until bugsy posted this I had never heard of him or heard this version, only fleetwood macs version-its great that he plays harp on this one-I saw where he died in a car crash in 1976
