When I was a kid, my cousin used to get comic books that I would read at weekends round his house. They were the small warbooks and Superman, Captain Marvel, Batman etc.
From these I got the impression that all the kids over in the US had crewcut hairstyles, wore baseball boots and jeans and rode queer looking bikes to deliver newspapers just by throwing them onto the lawns in front of the houses.
In the adverts were things that always fascinated me. The one I remember most was the Crystal Radio watch. Not very mobile due to the antenna requirements but all the same I was intrigued. The other thing was the hypnotising disc and of course there were the X-Ray specs.
Did any of these things work and do any of you in the US remember these things being advertised in comic books?

I had the X-Ray specs. They were just cheap cardboard sunglasses with sort of cellophane lenses the had some kind of what looked like feathers inside the edges that would distort your vision (kind of hard to explain). Basically your vision was distorted enough for you to see a kind of aura around whatever you looked at. Not an X ray.
And to think...here I was a young and impressionable child very excited thinking I would be able to see breasts!! ---------- Tommy

@ tommy, i read the advert regarding Xray specs, it says for $2 you can get the de-lux model, these must have been the ones that could see breasts.

Damn!!
I had Sea Monkeys but i must have done something wrong because nothing happened. They were only small brine shrimp or something. Maybe i killed them with my death touch? I had ordered "Dim Mak" the week before from Count Dante. ---------- Tommy

My friend Billy, had the submarine. I was in it.
My wife talks about reading the add for the submarine. She and her cousins wanted to get it and explore the Ohio River.
They had no idea it was a large piece of cardboard. It was a glorified cardboard box in the shape of a submarine, but two 10 year old boys could get inside and play.

My wife and I were both besotted by the idea of the submarine. We were just talking about it the other day. I hadn't really thought what would happen to the cardboard. Didn't know it was cardboard. But the $10 price tag (or whatever it was) should have alerted me...

I never ordered any of the above but will say that i did order the 100 piece army set back in the mid 60,s.I sent in my hard earned allowance money and waited for that great looking army set to arrive. (it looked great anyway in the comic book)Hence, upon arrival that great looking army set was 100 pieces of 1/4 inch plastic which totally ruined my day.I still don,t think I,ve gotten over it,and thats probrably why I play the Blues.

I remember they used to advertise a complete fishing outfit too. Rod, line, reel, hooks, floats, weights etc. That was about 100 items too if I recall. ----------

I use to read & collect comic books.. I wish I still had them, but my Mom must've thrown them out. Superman was always my favorite !
I ordered the X-Ray glasses... mine were a black plastic that had adjustable knobs on the sides... if you held your hand up to a light, you could see a "shadow" outline around your hand.
I remember taking them to a neighbor friends house, and put them on when his mom came out... she asked me what they were, and I said "X-Ray glasses"... She let out a yelp, covered-up a bit, and ran into the house... that was the best reaction that I got out of wearing them !
