Yesterday Sean Carney came by my tunnel of dreams studio with his current band which features Omar Colman on harp/vocals, Abdell Bouyousfi on bass (via france), and sean's uncle dave west on drums. I have been friends with Sean for quite awhile. He turned us on to on Granville Ohio. We have been here 4 years and love it. Omar and I hit it off right off. He, IMO, could easily be the next big name harp player out of chicago. He has that junior wells vibe to his playing and infuses his own sound and his vocals are big as a house. I used a secret direct set up for his harp(no amp used it went direct into the computer through a mic preamp combo). Let me know what you think.
The session was my first as a recording engineer for a band other than my own. I got things set up before they came and things progressed smoothly. I emphasized playing quiet and they all pulled it off great. Everything was recorded in one room old school style with lots of bleeding of mics into each other. I put a few waist high isloation barriers around the drum kit and guitar amp. The bass went direct. We didn't have enough headphones for everyone so I ran the bass and harp through the monitors so everyone could hear them. So what you got here is a 4 piece band all in a 25/25 foot space, recorded live, old school chess records style, no headphones, quiet volume. More sample to come. Walter

wow! this stuff really showcases how great you really are. i mean no offense, but when you record by yourself you can drift into very personal space, having the other guys with your really sharpens things up. maybe it will help people appreciate the rest of your work. your recording skills have also really gotten top-notch over the years.. getting such a cool sound out of the group. beats the heck out of many recent blues recordings i have heard.

thanks guys but I didn't play on this session. I engineered it in my studio. It was the sean carney band playing. I dug the role of engineer. I basically tried to capture the sound of thier band as it sounded. It was a first for me to record a band that I wasn't playing in. It made the role of engineer much more enjoyable. I have since done a second mix and think it sounds much better t than these samples.
I can play this kind of stuff but it isn't my thing anymore. I use to play this stuff all the time in my early days. My wife listened to it tonight and commented it brought back lots of memories of my early bands that did pretty much the same covers as these guys did. I still enjoy hearing it played right. thanks Lip Ripper- maybe I will be the next lenord chess.......... :-) I do enjoy making recordings of people that I like. I could never do it for a living-taking in any paying customers that come in the door.
Anybody have a clue to as what mic/rig was used for Omar's harp??????????
Walterharp: Thanks for the compliment on the recording quality! I have persued this like I did playing- I give it all my time. I easily spend 30-50 hours a week recording (over the past 10 years). I spent a lot of time in real studios back in my heyday and the more I do it the more things come back to me that I had no idea I even was aware of. I have gone through a lot of cheap gear and worked my way up to pro level stuff. I am glad I am just buying the high end stuff. It would have been a waste of time for many years. Like playing, recording is about learning to make ones own sound. My recording sound makes me think of a modern chess meets classic sinatra era stuff. I am getting closer and closer to it everyday! Sometimes I get tempted to do an album like this one just to show I can do it. Maybe next time Sean comes in with his band I will have them back me for some traditional sounding stuff. On the site with the above songs are a few samples from a session I did this summer (available on cdbaby). Sean is on guitar and I had a real band behind me. I think that may be as close to getting traditional as I can nowadays. I realize most people won't relate much to my stuff because it is different, but it makes me feel much better than doing the traditional stuff. I gave sean a copy of the mix I posted here. I told him if he liked it somewhat we could tweek it together so as to get the sound he wants. Kiler stuff, Walter. I told you Omar was bad ass. Sean is killer, too. I haven't seen him in a while. The last time that I saw him he was in the Bay Area backing Phil Berkowitz.

Joe L: Omar has a future. I told him to get some cool looking suits and put a real show together. He has enough of the old school in him to pull that off and enough new school to really stand out on the scene. With his classic JB Hutto like voice, harp playing seeped in the Junior Wells school, and enough fancy high end playing, he could be the next african american blues harp/singer. Sean is a world class guitarist/singer and one of the nicest guys you will meet. Abdell the bassist is one of the top upright players in europe. He came over here to play sean's blues for a cure (cancer) shows this past weekend and backs sean on his european tours. It was a good band for sure and all younguns (except for sean's uncle who is my age).
